USUHS Air Force

I am not far in my schooling- entering my third year to attain my BS. I have no previous military background. I want to attend USUHS, and become a doc but I worry that they might frown on me having no previous military experience. I want to enlist in the AF after/during enrollment to USUHS...will this make my application better? I am currently attending a private university and my grades are mid A's to high B's. Just wondering what USUHS will think of me as an applicant. Any advide would be great!

Good thought but this isnt the place for this thread. USUHS is a MD school, so the pre-DO thread isnt a good place to get seen. Also, there are already USUHS threads that discuss all four services at USUHS so I would go there for further discussion

For your question, many students at USUHS, maybe half of each class, have no military background. You cannot enlist in anything during or after USUHS because if you attend USUHS you have no choice but to commission into active duty in one of the uniformed services (army, navy, AF, PHS) and you must serve in this service for 7 years after you finish residency. USUHS looks at applicants like any other medical school, grades, MCAT, and experience. The only difference would be that you could try to experience military medicine...they like to know that students know what they are getting into. Go to the above thread and you will find more than enough information.

Wait, what? No, you don't enlist WHILE at USUHS, and there's no good reason to enlist before going either. Enlisting means you become an enlisted member of the Air Force, then work for 4 years in the Air Force. Whatever your recruiter may tell you, you need to assume that if you enlist it will be at least 4 years before you have the chance to do anything else. If you go to USUHS straight out of college, on the other hand, you become an officer and are considered active duty for the entire time you're in school.

Also, why USUHS? Have you seen the campus and fallen in love with it? Or do you think you won't be getting in anywhere else? It's not a bad school or anything, and might as well be one of the school's you're aplying to, but it caries a MUCH longer obligation that the military HPSP scholarship without paying a whole lot more and I can't really see going there if you have another comperable choice. Is it really worth a 10 year active duty obligation (or 7 years + six in the active reserves) to go there vs. a school you think is a slightly worse fit?
