Hi,
I'm a rising college junior looking at medical schools and USUHS is my first choice right now (preferably Navy, but Army's a second choice), and I'm hoping someone out there can answer a few questions that are/aren't really related. Some of them have already been answered on older threads, but a lot of them are from 2005 or earlier.

1) While I've got two years to work on this, does anyone have any good tips to work on getting into good PT range? I can do about 25 sit-ups without stopping at the moment, and once I really start running again (just got off crutches 2 weeks ago, dislocated my knee falling out of my car, of all the stupid things to do) I think I'll be okay on the 1.5 mile time. I was also wondering if anyone had any good tips for being able to do push-ups, since right now I can do about 2 "girly" ones.

2) Did anyone find USUHS tougher to get into or about the same as most allopathic medical schools? Right now I've got a 3.69 with a 3.73 in the sciences, and I'm taking the MCAT in August, though with only the physics I can remember from high school. (I'm taking Physics this upcoming school year) I swear, I'm not fishing for a "you'll get in," I just want to hear what people who go there felt it was like in comparison to other schools they applied to, if any.

3) Are there any women on this forum who went through/are in USUHS
or the HPSP program? Do you feel any discrimination? I guess I really just want to know what it's like for women, as I'm the only girl I know considering either of these options.

I want to thank anyone who answers my questions in advance. I really appreciate it.

PT--
The best way to get into push-up shape? DO push-ups and I'm not being sarcastic here. My personal best in push-ups came by doing that. The same goes for sit-ups. You can do different things like flutter kicks, crunches, wide arm and closed hand push-ups but these are just to keep it interesting in my opinion. One easy way to combine your efforts is something called pyramids. Start with 12 or 10 push-ups then do 12 or 10 situps then run a lap repeat by subtracting one rep and go to 4 or zero. The object is to be unable to complete your last rep...and I mean you physically can't no matter how hard you try. In the army we used to call this muscle failure PT and I can think of no better way to get in shape quick...but it hurts a little!😉

I don't know what to tell you except to look in the MSAR and look at the scores for USUHS admits compared to everywhere else. On interview day there is a very laid back attitude and you'll get that when you come. Competativeness has been addressed a little in the USUHS forum and it differs year to year but you will find it toward the middle based on scores of those accepted. Your scores with a decent MCAT (> or = 26) will probably get you an interview if you get your stuff in quick. Speed of your application materials (ie the secondary materials) to the door is key. Getting a early interview is important at any med school if possible.

There is a female who just graduated her handel is USUHS2008. She is in the USUHS forum you should pose your descrimination question to her. I have never seen heard or otherwise suspected any form of discrimination against women for any reason in my 2 years here. I personally have the utmost respect for my female colleagues and feel that this is the prevailing attitude of my classmates and the administration.

Best of luck...and if you post in the USUHS forum you are more likely to get quick responses as many of us USUHS folks peruse that forum regularly to answer questions like these, just a heads up.

Thank you, and thanks for the tip about the USUHS forum.

I'm starting to do push-ups, but I'm also trying to build upper body strength so that I can do more than 2 before I fall flat on my face
