Do things such as car rentals and hotel stays that are NOT paid by USUHS and coming out of my pocket count towards the education deduction under "qualified education expenses"?
It states that:
"For purposes of the student loan interest deduction, these expenses are the total costs of attending an eligible educational institution, including graduate school. They include amounts paid for the following items:
The problem seems to be that I am not paying USUHS, but outside car rental and hotel vendors.
4th year has been pretty expensive as only one interview rotation (without car, so paid for car), EM, neurology, and anesthesia are paid for (only 1/3 the year).
I am looking to minimize my out of pocket costs, which are greater than $10,000 at this point.
Any other advice?

- Tuition and fees.
- Room and board.
- Books, supplies and equipment.
- Other necessary expenses (such as transportation).
- The allowance for room and board, as determined by the eligible educational institution, that was included in the cost of attendance (for federal financial aid purposes) for a particular academic period and living arrangement of the student, or
- The actual amount charged if the student is residing in housing owned or operated by the eligible educational institution."
