Just wondering if anyone out there has anything to share about their experience being interviewed for the dental program and the University of Sydney? I have an interview coming up soon.

Thank you!

Yep. What would you like to know? 🙂 Where are you from?

I'm from Canada. I'm just wondering what kinds of questions they ask, what they're looking for, and maybe you can tell me what you think of the program? I was backpacking in Oz a year ago and fell in love with the country. I really want to attain my dental education there/possibly move.

Thank again.

The interview is usually in front of a panel of 3 persons, the dean, a faculty member, and someone from the community. As for what they ask you.. I forgot all the questions they asked me, but I remember it being a pretty standard dental interview.

Why dentistry?
Why Sydney University?
Leadership experiences?
Research experiences? etc etc.
What do you think of PBL? 🙂 they love that sort of stuff.

As for the manual skills exam. They will make you bend ortho wire to fit along a paper template, and carve a wax cube. Watch out, its more difficult than it first appears.

As for what I think of the program. I think in general it’s a good education.. some of our facilities could use some updating though. Sometimes our faculty is very reliant on the med faculty and can sometimes be unorganized. (The first 2 years you do EVERYTHING the med students do.. same PBL problems, sit in same lectures, same exams – in addition to our own “dental exams” on top of that). So for the first two years we a lot busier than they are. Haha actually, I think all 4 years we are busier than they are. But, its good. We get good clinical exposure I think.

I think dental school, (or any schooling) for that matter is really what you make it. Forge ahead with an open mind and a good work ethic and you will be fine. Good luck!

Dr.Millisevert,

I too have been accepted for an international interview (IM from canada as well) and was wondering if you had any idea how many international places there are?

I've been searching the net to find out info on the total number of places in the program but have been unsucessful so I realize I'll probably get a rough estimate from you, no worries thats all I'm after.

Also, did you apply as a local applicant or an international applicant?

Thanks in advance,

First of all.. congrats on your interview!

There are 67 people total in my year, but the year below us has around 75-79 I think.

I heard they were going to try and increase the class size next year to close to 90-100 next year, but I'm not sure if that will happen.

Regardless of the total class size: I believe that they admit around 8-12 internationals each year. Not sure what the competition will be like for you because you would only be competing against other internationals for those spots.

If you’ve been granted an interview then that means that your GPA and DAT/GAMSAT score were acceptable.

At this point, you only need to do well in the interview and pass the manual skills exam.

Good Luck!

Thank for the quick reply. Thats pretty much exactly what I wanted to hear.

I've been worrying a bit about the interview (even though I've been through them before) which was most likely due to the fact that I want to go to Usyd more than the other schools I've been looking at.

One must assume that if they plan on increasing the size of the total students accepted then they would probably increase the number of international students accepted as well, but this might not be the case. *Probably just wishful thinking on my part

Now to rock the interview 👍

Is it true they got rid of the "wax box" exercise from the manual skills test and now it only consists of wire bending?

Thanks again for the reponse, your older posts have been most helpful in uncovering the details of the Usyd Bdent program.
