I'm on the payroll at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. Building cranes are swinging and construction workers are at full speed. Faculty is active and programs are being developed. Website is live and is constantly updated.

As many may know, most slots are set for Texas residents (state law), but UT-Austin has always looked for a diverse student body. Applications for medical school year 2016-2017 will be taken upon LCME approval of the medical school (50 slots for each of the first four years, total yearly enrollment figures are slated to increase to around 150 in ten years' time). Teaching and research employment interviews continue for PhD's in all specialties.

Ask me some questions, I'll research for answers.

If there are only 50 seats in the entering class, does it mean there is only 10%, or 5 seats, available for OOS students?

Would the first class graduate free of debt? I heard ut rio grande valley medical school is also open in 2016, and every student would have four years covered.

Yeah, come live in the RGV and you'll soon know why. Stay away from that school if you can.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Medical School will have normal tuition schedule. What is proposed is that the local community generate four-year scholarships for the entering class with the hope that a debt free medical student would be inclined to return to the Valley to practice after residency. The school has already started several of their residency programs with PGY1 beginning this July 1 at affiliated local hospitals.

There are no signals at all that UT-Austin will offer financial aid dissimilar to that of the other University of Texas medical schools. (I will check for a definitive answer, though.)

Jealous that you guys snagged Dr. Miller from UTMB! He is the best. Anyone applying in the future should know that they have an amazing anatomy teacher! Do you know if UT-A Dell will go to the same hospitals as UTMB for clerkships?

Austin facilities have had a constant UTMB student presence for decades, and we expect UT-Austin Dell local clerkships will coexist. Also, UT-Austin Dell students will fill clerkship spots on the island.

1) MS1 = traditional MS1/MS2, I like this idea.

What are "assessments?" Are they huge exams covering all the material from the previous blocks?

2) Step 1 during the start of MS3, I like this idea. When do you plan for students to take Step 2 CK/CS?

3) MS3, this is what I do not like. The optional elective or vacation time is good. Burn out will be extremely high for your students during MS1/MS2 since there is no Summer Break.

However, why not start MS4 earlier? 3-4 months of research is plenty of time to get a poster and publication (even in basic science research) - if your students are working with excellent professors. The format of the curriculum is forcing students into a dual degree or wasting valuable time before the September residency application dead-line.

I would put the MS4 Jul-Sept in the place of MS3 Jan-April. Then give MS4 elective time from May-Sept. Let your students study for Step2 CK/CS during that time, and do away rotations. Then in MS4 Jan-April replace it with the MS3 Jan-April (Innovation and Leadership) - if you want.

4) Are you going to allow podcasting lecture during MS1 or force attendance to lecture?

5) Any plans to have MS2 Clerkships outside of Texas?

6) MS2 Clerkship Shelf exams - going to be NBMEs or home-made?

7) Is the DOCS done with Standardized Patients?

8) MS1 Anatomy Lab - going to be virtual or using donors?

9) Histology - going to be virtual microscope or real microscope?

10) Study rooms, and study areas - are there Medical Student dedicated areas for this in the library or building? What is the design/layout?

11) TBLs/PBLs what is the medical school going to do with these since the LCME has a "hard on" for these?

Any word regarding creation of an anesthesiology residency program in the near future?

Yes, there will be a anesthesiology residency; along with most all other residencies and fellowships when the new hospital opens in two years.

As a current undergrad at UT:
1) Will you guys be favoring your own undergrads?
2) I interned for DMS last Spring helping setup the task force committee's and was wondering if this will have any influence in admissions, I'm extremely familiar with DMS as I helped build the curriculum (and the building).

Tl;Dr My stats aren't fantastic but I'll offer you my firstborn son for acceptance at Dell Med.

Won't favor UT-Austin undergrads, won't exclude them either. Networking goes along way in much of life; knowing the ins-and-outs of the medical school is beneficial; stats matter.

Important: UT-Austin Dell wants to reinvent medical school, gonna' be a lot of political correctness around it all, and everyone is going to be judged through a microscope of analysis. A sea-change in the way things are done in medical education and research has to start somewhere, and the business of UT-Austin is the advancement of the administration of education and research. Graduating MD's is but one part of the mission-- the whole UT-Austin Dell enterprise requires an enormous investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and human effort.

Hello, I'm currently a PGY4 radiology resident interviewing for IR fellowship. I tried PM'ing you with some specific questions but was not allowed. Would you mind shooting me a message?

The most important thing to realize is that the new U. Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, the new university hospital, all of the research facilities, educational programs, personnel, and the nursing school, are units of U. Texas at Austin governed by the U. Texas at Austin President; unlike the independent of university medical schools and programs at UTSW, UTMB and UT-H, which are governed by the U. Texas System Chancellor.

All services at the U. Texas at Austin Dell Medical School will have academic department/division/section status, and the new teaching hospital will be run by U. Texas at Austin Dell Medical School academic personnel. If you want to look at the blueprint for Austin, look at how UTSW runs the new Parkland Memorial Hospital and their new University Hospital, and at the way UTMB runs the Sealy Hospitals (the new Jennie Sealy Hospital looks fantastic!) Types of private practices at the new Austin hospital will be operated differently, if at all, than that of previous operations at Brackenridge Hospital. Like the new Parkland Memorial Hospital, the new U. Texas at Austin University Hospital will be the designated county hospital. U. Texas at Austin Dell Medical School will also have programs at the Seton Medical Center and the Dell Children's Hospital, and to a lesser extent at area private hospitals and specialty facilities. (Brackenridge Hospital is slated for redevelopment for mental health services and administration.)

What sort of stats are you looking for in the first class? A&M/TTU level or UTSW/Baylor level?

Yes, there will be a anesthesiology residency; along with most all other residencies and fellowships when the new hospital opens in two years.

Is it anticipated that these new residencies will open up for the graduating medical class of 2017?

Is there a tentative date for LCME approval? Website says "summer 2015," but I wonder if there's something more specific then that.

I'll also +1 on Mavs' question.

Thanks for the info!

Will you be favoring people who are getting clinical experience (working)/letters of recommendation (shadowing) from within the Seton network?

Additionally, what kind of research will the committees be looking for in prospective students?

This sounds scary and potentially unwise. Can you elaborate?

Is Dell going to supplant UTSW as the sexiest med school in the UT system?

Guessing DMS will be looking for stats around 3.8/35. Their condensed curriculum resembles Duke/Vandy/HMS(?), so I would imagine they want students who can step up to plate and produce.

Would the first class graduate free of debt? I heard ut rio grande valley medical school is also open in 2016, and every student would have four years covered.

I spent 2 weeks down the Valley helping CVS keep their pharmacies open. Then I heard news of a MS13 and Los Cetas shootin' it out on UT-Brownsville campus in broad day light. Go figure.

I just checked LCME's website and DMS has preliminary accreditation, which means the time is soon.

UTRGV looks like we'll have to wait another year though.

How much of a pay-cut do UT Austin specialists have to take, compared to their equivalent private practice colleagues?

What grading system will Dell use? Pass or fail?

What would you consider for a decent MCAT to be in range of Dell?

Dell numbers will be similar to that of UTSW.

Yes, unless you do extremely well in all other measurable and interviews.
