What MCAT and GPA is necessary to get an interview at UT Houston? I saw on this forum that Southwestern gave interviews to people with a 3.5 and MCAT of 30 (which I have trouble believing)

there is no secret combination that gets you an interview. it will depend a lot more on how you sell yourself in your app than what your numbers are.

The reason this is getting lots of views and minimal responses is because there is no easy answer to this question. There is no silver bullet to getting an interview or an acceptance.

People get interviews with sub-30 MCATs all the time. And people don't get into medical school with 40+ MCATs. I have a friend who this happened to and it sucks, but his GPA was low and the 40 or 41 MCAT couldn't recover his chances enough.

Meanwhile, I got a UT-Houston interview with a 25 MCAT and a cGPA 3.91, sGPA 3.8ish. I retook the MCAT and ended up getting into UTMB with a 29 MCAT and cGPA 3.87, sGPA 3.74 and am starting in a month.

It is rumored that Southwestern has a 30 MCAT cutoff. I don't know if that is actually true or not, but I didn't interview there.. though that was probably more a factor of applying later in the cycle than anything. Who knows? I don't care lol, I'm going to my #1 🙂

Just try your best and really sell yourself in the application. And if you get an interview, be the best version of yourself you can be without being dishonest or fake. Don't make excuses for anything. If you have to explain something less than desirable, explain it as an experience you learned from. And be genuinely interested in their school. This shouldn't be hard, seeing as you applied there... why would you apply somewhere that you wouldn't want to be lol.

As a side note, why do you have trouble believing that Southwestern interviews people with 30MCAT and 3.5 cGPA? For entering class 2009, their MCAT Score Range was 26 to 43 for those ACCEPTED, not just interviewed. Their average MCAT was 33.7.

Just be careful how you word things... Personally not offended by your comment because I don't think the MCAT is the end all be all of success in medical school by ANY stretch and I'm going to assume you don't mean ill by it, but there are people out there who would get offended by your comments that a 30MCAT and a 3.5 GPA are somehow insufficient for the hallowed halls of UT-Southwestern It's just a school...

For the last 6 months, I have had to work with/around UTSW 3rd year medical students... They are definitely not a super impressive bunch. I have more common sense in my pinky than most of them have in their entire body. The point is, scores are not everything. Sure, most of them made very high MCAT scores, and some of them are very nice people, but I think that if you really want to go there, it is not all about the numbers. Don't ever sell yourself short. If you think you have what it takes, then go full force. Like Hiner said, it’s just a school... 🙂

I have more common sense in my pinky than most of them have in their entire body. The point is, scores are not everything. Def agree with noshie. I had a friend with 33 mcat and 3.8ish gpa with great research experience. With her numbers she got interviews at most places she applied to. Sadly, she was one of those people who was too smart to have proper social skills and was rejected everywhere post interview. Luckily she got accepted off of waiting list but the moral of the story is that there's more to med school acceptance than just numbers!
