Anyone know how hard it is to get into UT-Memphis as an out of state resident? What would a competitive gpa/DAT look like? Thanks! ANy special consideration for surrounding states.... like AR?

Dear KatieJune,
I would recommend calling the admissions office (or looking at the website) to see how many students they take from out of state. This is a pretty good indicator of how high the stats might be. (if they take 2 people, the stats will be really high and if they take ten or more, they will be a little less competitive). I know UMKC takes about 15-20/100 from out of state. However, 12 are from Kansas. 2 are from Hawaii, etc. They have quotas and stuff to deal with. Each state is different and the admissions office can often tell you.
Good luck!

Katie, I am also from AR (Jonesboro) and trying to get into UT. Where are you from? I received an application in the mail from them a while back and it included a letter that said they accept 10% (8 students) out of state. I sent my application in last week, so I guess I will find out. When I talked to one of the admissions people, they said the DAT has been a problem for out of state students in the past, but didn't comment much on how competitive it was. When are you applying? Any more questions feel free to ask.

If you are from AR, then you have a little bit of an advantage over other out-of-staters. The UT system has a deal with the state of AR since AR does not have its own dental school. Make sure you are a competitive applicant anyway and maybe things will work out.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your numbers?

I'm not an AR resident, but I did, however, go to the Univ of Arkansas. UT Memphis, LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama, UMKC, Baylor(1 spot) all have spots for AR residents(I think there are other schools that take AR residents, but will still make you pay out of state fees). At these schools you will only be compared to other AR residents not other out of staters. UT Memphis has the most spots available to AR residents, but don't be discouraged by only 8 spots, there aren't THAT many applicants from AR. I'm not saying that you don't have to be a competitive applicant, I'm just saying that you don't have to have ridiculous stats(3.8GPA/20+DAT) to get in somewhere. Hope this helps!

I believe the actual numbers are 8 people from outside TN and AR ... and then 18 people from AR, i could be wrong on the AR values though ...

AR is considered instate since AR does not have a dental school of its own.

you do have an advantage being from AR though, i was from MS and i only made first alternate through the final cuts and finally was accepted due to someone deciding to go to their home school.

.

Are you attending now? I thought that it wasn't exactly considered in-state. This is from the arkansas website, I added the numbers from the UT website.

www.arkansashighered.com/arheg.html

SREB Contracts
If the school participates in the SREB contract program, the State pays a set fee per student to the SREB according to the table below.

Fall 2004
Dentistry $12,000

(Exceptions: Students attending the University of Tennessee (dentistry)..., are charged the resident tuition ($12000) plus the difference between the non-resident tuition ($30000) and the sum of the resident tuition and the SREB contract fee ($12000 + $12000).)

That would put the arkansas resident paying $18,000 a year. Not exactly in-state, but much better than out of state.

Anyway, I applied there a few weeks ago for '05. Can you offer me any advice or information at this point from your experience? Do you mind saying what your DAT scores were? I have like a 3.8 overall, with all pre-reqs completed, and I'm taking the DAT this summer (the secretary said they would still offer interviews, based on the rest of the application, as long as the DAT was completed by december.)

Thanks!
Jason

Hi Thanks to all for responding.

To all who are applying/have applied or who are attending:
I'm wondering why they say recommendations are not "required", but will be accepted. Are they encouraged? If you don't turn in recs is it an advantage? What did you all do? Thanks!

As far as getting in UT, they do reserve so many slots for Arkansas students (as stated above). About 1/3 of my class is from AR. But, according to the current dean of admissions, don't plan on getting accepted if you don't live in TN or AR and do not fall into a minority. I had to work in TN for a year (moved from MO) and show them my tax return before they would consider me (and I had above average stats).
As far as letters of recommendation, submit them. They can only help and distinguish your application. During my interview, my letter of recommendation was the main topic. Good luck.

I met with Dr. Coleman last month and he basically told me the same thing.

i still disagree with that somewhat ... if you manage to keep your stats competetitive you do stand a good chance of getting in.

I made it to 1st alternate and had to wait a couple weeks to get in but it finally happened. It's sort of something you have to work for. I knew that i absolutely did not want to go to my state school, so i was shooting for all out of state places.

I will be applying to UT this fall. I see by now, you have already graduated. Could you give me a brief overview of your dental school experience? How the interviewing process went? Thanks so much!
