To all those interested in staying in the South East for residency.... University of Tennessee in Memphis is a great ObGyn program and shouldn't be overlooked. It is a 10 resident per year program in a urban county hospital setting but with several months out of the year spent in private hospitals. The delivery numbers are high and there is a wide variety of pathology. The department just hired a new chairwoman, from Wayne State, who is supposed to be great. Residents seem to comply with the duty hour rules without too much trouble. The MFM program is great and there are plenty of high risk patients. Gyn Onc is run by private docs associated with the university, but the lack of fellows means that the residents actually do the cases, not first or second assist. Memphis itself is not as trendy as Atlanta or beautiful as Nashville but there is a lot of culture and a lot of character here. Anyway, just wanted to put in a little plug for UT! 🙂

hey daisy,
are you from UT memphis??....just wondering...do you know if they accepts D.O.'s with only Comlex score??..i didn't take usmle.....i applied to east tennessse, do you know if that's a good program???...
thanks

yeah, I'm here at UT (m4). I don't know of any current DO's in ObGYn... but that doesn't mean they don't accept them. There are a few IMG's in this year's intern class. I think its worth a shot. From talking to the PD this year he said that last year he didn't interview enough people and in the end had to scramble for a few residents and this year plans to be more broad in who he chooses to invite for an interview. There are definitely DO's in other departments at UT... I don't get the impression that they discriminate against DO's here. As for ETSU... I don't know much about it... but in general it is a much more rural area as opposed to an urban center with the typical inner-city issues (but in my opinion, lots of learning opportunities!!).

Whenever I say "chairman" the feminazis seem to correct me and say "chairperson". I don't really care...I'm just wondering if this is a double-standard out there.
