Hi everyone,
I’m hoping to hear from current students at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine.
I’m a non-traditional applicant (late 30s, veteran, career changer, and father) and UTRGV is high on my list because of the community-focused mission, smaller class size, and early clinical exposure.
I’d really appreciate some honest perspectives from people actually in the program.
A few things I’m curious about:
Overall question: If you had the choice again, would you pick UTRGV SOM?
Thanks in advance — I’d really appreciate any insight from current students.

A few things I’m curious about:
- What’s the overall student culture like? Is it collaborative or more competitive?
- How supportive is the administration when students are struggling academically or personally?
- How strong are the clinical rotations and residency match support?
- Do students feel like the PBL curriculum works well or does it feel disorganized sometimes?
- How is life living in the RGV area during med school?
