I have a lot of thoughts on the term "Accountability Center" alone.
Also, wouldn't it be fun working as a therapist at that place? Everyone loves forced treatment! And that's assuming they have mh diagnoses to begin with.

The Trump Administration are deporting a lot of manual labor jobs typically filled by immigrants, so they want poor (white) people and their children to replace that labor. The added cruelty is just the icing on top for them.
Its gross. Its always gross and cruel and intentional with these scumbags. Its a sad state of affairs.

Between this and the AI future, I imagine that a permanent poor/working class is what they are shooting for.
On the one hand, this story generally disgusts me on a base moral level. On the other hand, I guess that we will still be in business in the dystopian future, mandated or otherwise. In fact, the powers that be seem to want to make depression a popular thing among the workers.
I already work at the VA. Nuff said.

Speaking of, I can see disability claims skyrocketing among the general public with this push to 'engage' the homeless while getting rid of medicaid and SNAP.
Fun Fact: If you're on SSDI, you're not counted in the unemployment number. The "real unemployment rate" (U6) is 24.7%, while the reported unemployment rate (U3) is 4.3%.
12% of Americans being on food assistance makes a LOT more sense when you consider the real unemployment rate.
My guess is that a year-to-year graph of the %age of the population on SSDI (especially for mental disorders) has been increasing over time with no end in sight...kind of like the MH-related s/c disabilities for veterans. The only (empirical) question is when (or if?) this increase over time in the %age of the population who are considered disabled due to mental health disorders will ever 'level off' (and where?) or if/when the current trend is broadly viewed as detached from reality and unsustainable by the public at large (working taxpayers). Time will tell.
Are they just moving the camps from underpasses to another area?

Well they have banned sleeping outdoors in Salt Lake City and will be moving people to a 16 acre area outside the city limits. This includes involuntary "accountability centers" for those with substance abuse or mental illness.
I wonder how soon "treatment" will defined as picking fruits and vegetables in the hot sun for free?

Jesting is good in the face of barbaric absurdity. Rest assured, though, some of us are still out there fighting in the ways we can.
While I do respect the sentiment, I TRULY do not think that words represent fighting. Fighting isn't protests. It's guns. And once guns are used en masse, it becomes groups armed with ARs vs an MQ Reaper drone using Hellfire missiles, which quickly becomes a bunch of parts of dead people. Remember Biden's 2024 statement that if people wanted to take on the government, they'd need F15s, not just a rifle? You can't tell me that some pawn in the Pentagon hasn't run those numbers.
I think people don't understand how it is to interact with something that absolutely does not care. Not "doesn't care" (e.g., defensive). Doesn't care (e.g., telling someone with Antisocial Personality Disorder that they hurt your feelings, or telling a casino that you really needed that money you lost). That's how effective words are.
That's where the jokes come in.

I would argue that the only really effective way to fight it is through voting. These people do not care about our opinions if they are in power. You can run and save yourself. That said, as a minority, most of the options are not looking great in the western world. Neo- nazis are marching through London, Canada seems to hate Indians as much as the U.S. hates Latinx immigrants. Mainland Europe is not in the best of places either.
The truth is that technology is coming to displace the common worker everywhere. As that happens, groups are fighting each other for scraps rather than uniting. This homeless camp is the first move in a much bigger fight. What happens when the jobless and the homeless outnumber the police?
As it stands, I am listening to a podcast about Amazon planning to use AI robots to replace 75% of their warehouse workers. Wonder what that will do to the future of everyday people?
Man ... this is likely just me being completely out of touch with the true elite ... but I can't really imagine wanting to live in this world even as a part of the "ruling class." Like what's the end goal here, the people pushing this already have everything and more?

Methinks the 6 major corporate media owners are creating an air of doom and gloom. For what purpose? I dunno. History has taught us that people flood towards fascism when there is a general air of fear. We also know that if money gets too centralized, the velocity of money declines, options and derivatives tank, followed by the underlying assets, followed by economic depression. We also know that if you mix young men with unemployment and fear, the results are not great for power holders. Maybe there is a solution that has been ignored since Uruk, but...
You're comparing it to what you know. It's like comparing a psychology department position at Lightmyfart State vs a top R1. Most people have no idea what is better. But for the subsection of the population that are psychologists, who care about academia, this gets VERY VERY VERY competitive. The elites have their own type of competition. Those richard-heads compete about the historical significance of their tableware.
As someone who has worked with the chronic and severely mentally ill for much of my career. I am not against mandating treatment ans part of a legal requirement and definitely have seen where it is necessary and essential. Much of the effective intervention for substance use is mandated and always has been and based on the research it’s effective and the people that get their lives together because of being forced to do something are typically grateful for the intervention. Do I trust the governments ability to institute this in an effective and humane way? Not really, but to just continue to allow the crap show to continue the way it has since deinstitutionalization is not a solution either. One problem I see with treatment for severely mentally ill is very few psychologists being directly involved. We farm it out to midlevels and bureaucrats and too often we just sit in our ivory towers taking potshots and not actually getting involved.
