Every school has a group of Utah guys or at least Utah ties (BYU students from another state). I'm guessing about 15% or more of our class graduated from a Utah college or university. There is 3 from the UofU (including me), one from UVSC, a couple from Utah State, and a busload from BYU.

I talked to a BYU alum that is at Marquette and he said that it is a family friendly city...especially the free rent that the government gives them for being married and in school.

What schools are you applying to?

I heard Kentucky is a great school for families. That is if they did not stop accepting Utah students when they got that new Dean a few years back. I think Case by far accpets the most Utahns. I think UNLV and NOVA used to take a lot of Utahns but after the cheating that went on this year, that might change.

Was it Utah students doing the cheating? I heard at Nova that a couple students were putting glue in the apical foramen so that they would not overshoot on their endo praticals or so the filling material would not seep out or something. But I never heard anything about Utah students being involved. As far as Kentuky goes, they only accept 10 out of state students a year.

Arizona is one of the tops, without a doubt. This especially applies when viewing family life outside of school. The surrounding communities are similar to Utah communities in many ways.

My class has a couple of students from UVSC, four from BYU, (2 more from BYU-Idaho), and 3 from Southern Utah University.

So far I have been invited to interview at: Indiana, Case, Nova, and ASDOH. Hoping to get some more. I applied to: UNLV, Buffalo, Temple, Marquette, Nova, Case, ASDOH, Indiana, NYU, Creighton, UOP, and Louisville.
What are your stats?

go utes!!!

i go to U

and i am appling

11 other schools 🙂

Coming from Utah, you'll enjoy the environment in Arizona. Enough similarities to make you comfortable, but enough differences for it to be superior. 😀

Hmmm.....sounds like someone is enjoying Arizona! Don't forget about grand old San Francisco. It must be one of the coolest cities in the world. Plenty of families here from all over: Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona. A lot of them live in Marin county or in the Presidio. A great network of friends.

Hey I'm in Provo. Just scheduled my interview at UNLV for 10/26...Anyone want to car pool with me? I'll leave Wednesday afternoon...then may go boating Thursday afternoon or Friday before I head back...any takers? Send me a personal message in case I can't find this thread again...

I got an invite to Ohio State Yesterday afternoon!!!

Wahoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

I also got an invite from OSU,

I now have interviews with CASE, NOVA, OSU.

The sweetest part would be the football games. Since nova has no football team I have to settle for having the Miami Dolphins practice facility next to the dental school. But I'd much rather have a college football powerhouse to watch on the weekends. I well, I won't be complaining when I'm at the beach tomorrow. Good Luck on the interviews!

UNC is a very family friendly school with a good number of Utahns. The married student housing is brand new and real nice. There are currently about 40 "Utah" families living in married student housing. It has been great here!

You have no idea how good the football is here. I have been so excited about the Texas game, I can't even think straight. I was in the horseshoe last year and I still get sick thinking about it. I think we've got a shot this year.

GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!

Okay married-guy, family-man, Utahn applicants, question for you......

Say you are probably going to get in to either Case, Ohio State, UNLV etc. :luck:

Do you buy a house or do you rent for 4+ years? I am not planning on staying in these areaas to practice, but can't stand the thought of paying $35,000+ in rent, when it could go straight to equity in a home.

What do you married-family guys think about buying Vs. renting in these areas? I am personally leaning towards buying a house and then selling it after I am thru to an incoming freshman-utahn with a family.

What do you think?

Be careful in how you calculate the numbers. Money that you pay in a mortgage does not go "staight to equity in a home." The bulk of it goes to interest. Then you have property taxes, condo fees (if applicable), etc. So instead of sinking your money into rent, your sinking it into interest and other costs. You're basically renting someone's financial property as opposed to their real property.

The upside to buying, however, is that you can capture some appreciation...and hopefully that will reduce or even offset your interest costs, taxes, etc. But always remember there is some risk assumed when you have to sell a house and you are making a gamble with the real estate market. It was easy to sell a house here in Columbus when I moved here three years ago. Now, the market has become a bit softer and there are way too many houses on the market. My classmate has already put his house on the market in hopes that he can sell it before we graduate.

I'm not saying it is a bad idea to buy. There are some clear intangibles such as pride of ownership, a nice place to live, etc. But, I don't think it is the clear slam dunk that it is often thought to be. There is much to consider.

I just transfered to UNLV undergrad from Provo. A dinky little 2 bedroom townhouse in North Las Vegas is $300k. I bet you'll be paying double what you would if you were renting. If your going to be using student loans, they keep you on a VERY tight budget so they probably wouldn't cover that big of a mortgage.

If we were beginning dental school in most areas around the country 4+ years ago, it would make sense to purchase a condo, townhouse, or even a home. However, this is a very poor time to purchase a home as prices are beginning to drop dramatically. This is true unless you plan on living in your new place for 8+ years. These prices, particularly of condos are beginning to drop quickly and will drop much more in the upcoming years. My fear is that you get locked into a "reduced" price mortgage, and then have the value of your home/condo/townhouse decrease below what you owe, ultimately increasing the likelihood of having to take out a loan to pay off an existing mortgage. There are plenty of decent priced apartments for rent near just about every school that I applied to. Real often, it is easy to find areas that have several student families and LDS communities if that is what you are interested in. Those are my thoughts.

did anyone get anything from Temple over the weekend?
I didn't, but the rumor is out that they have began mailing out the invites.

(I was told by a friend at the school that I was guaranteed an interview, and that I would get the official invite soon. I haven't seen it yet.)

anyone else hear from marquette today?

I interview on the 23rd of Oct, it came by email!

Good Luck!!!

My app went out in the first AADSAS mailing, I forget when that was.

Best of Luck Utah Bros

Did any of you from the University of Utah attend the UNLV visit on campus yesterday?? What did you think?

I attended the meeting- The presentation sounded great, but by what some of the alumni and board scores showed it does not look that attractive. but everybody to their own.

I recieved an interview from Louisville for who ever was asking.

I also recieved a secondary from KU but I am having problems submitting it, we will see what happens

I also just got back from Case and all 4 of us was from Utah-thats crazy-both of the students we ate lunch with were both mormons-little provo-

I just got back from NOVA, I missed brownstein's visit. UNLV isn't that great anyway for the high price.

Nova rocked, now if I can just talk my wife into south florida (hurricanes) we are off!!!

If you are headed there for an interview send me a PM I'll hook you up w/info.

Don't buy a house in Cleveland! The market here is awful; it's now the poorest city in the country. You run a serious risk of not being able to sell. If you do buy, do it your first year. Buying in the second year will almost guarantee losing money.

Dude, you have no idea what you're taking about! Or, you're spending way too much time in East Cleveland.

If anyone wants any advice on buying a house in Cleveland, let me know. I am a lifelong Clevelander, am a homeowner and can give advice on the good areas to buy in.

Any interview invites in the last two weeks guys and gals?

Last I heard from was buffalo, right after marquette and temple.

i've gotten louisville and Iowa in the last two weeks. its weird b/c during both of my interview trips when I came home I had new invites to other places

I have Kentucky and Lousivile, I am excited because Lousiville moved their interview for me, now they are the same day!!!😀

DSMACK did you go to Marquettes presentation today-or did anybody else here?

youre doing both interviews the same day? cool. . . .

I did go, Brian Trecek is a great guy. I think the remodeled school will be sweet.

I haven't heard from Louisville or VCU still. I am also still holding out for Boston and Michigan. It is wierd that a couple of schools haven't responded at all. (e.g. S. Ill, Detroit Mercy, etc.) These aren't anyones top choices I am sure ,but why are they so late?

I meant the same week with Louisville and Kentucky,

I was not too excited about Marquettes interview that I have in a few weeks, but after Brian's presentation I am excited to see the school and interview there.

I am in the same boat about not hearing nothing from schools- I really want Maryland and Pacific, but I guess some schools can sit around knowing that they can take anybody they want from the pool so they can wait longer.

I guess we will see what happens in a week or two

Dsmack got ousted by Gavin C, he is sensitive about ASD OH. So if you didn't like A Z's interview, be careful what you say. Some people are sensitive. So

Anyway, Brian Trecek says he looks at this every thursday and that he hates it. he says he knows everyone's names though, which is a lie. He was funny though, his presentation was great. he is a very honest man.

Anyone heading out to Columbus next weekend?

My interview is Sept 30 does anybody know how many they interview in a day?

Is it a hard interview or a laid back one?

When I had my interview at case there was only 3 of us interviewing (one other kid from Utah). As far as the interview goes it totally depends on who you get. One guy was kinda laid back, the other not so much. Good Luck!

So...is he an "honest man"...or does he "lie"? I'm just trying to get through the mixed messages.

Best of luck to all you Utah applicants...especially since I heard that the U is backing off the dental school idea a bit. -Heard this from a reputable source today. (very active past UDA president - Dr. Mattson)

That's good, the only thing a dental school in Utah would be is a waste of money.
