Hi Guys,

I think my journey ended here because I got accepted also at UTHSCSA.
It was hard and frustrating but my advise is if you really want somthing you can do it.Do not get dishearted if you get a reection because I get many , and think positivly that wath do not put down will make you stronger and better preped for the next step.It was a long long waiting and strugling period of my life but an the end I think it was worthed.
I can not think yet clearly and I am shocked but it feels good.
I wish everybody all the best and do not loose your hope that one day wiil came your day also and the sun will raise for you too.
Please everybody do not forget the help which we all get from this forum and please give back as much as you can.

Congrats Nija dentist for UTHSCSA and thanks for all ur words.

But a word of caution to everyone the scores do matter depending on ur Nationality, the Schools do screen by domicile when reviewing the application and calling for Interview and acceptance ( so u land up in Intra country competetion.... I think u all understand which Nationality i am speaking about) even though some schools deny it.

I am not pessimistic or not to dishearten anyone but just a word of caution.

Congratulations naija..good to here your dream came true

Now for the rest of us...with all due respect to naija

I got 95, ece 3.86, toefl 104...a very early applicant ...no interview call fron UTSA......Regarding other Northeastern schools...I saw with me many other students below 85 got interview calls( they were chinese) may be they got accepted too...they got calls from places I did not get.

Nationality does matters...believe me or not.

I am not discouraging ppl or telling to lose hope in god or your self but this is to tell you that if you are from a country which has more than plenty applicants then better try to have an edge..even a score of 95 doesnt helps some times.

To be honest these schools have a specific number of seats for each country depending upon the number of applicants..we are competing withinn our own nationality and not with everyone. If BU has 75 seats ..it doesnt means every seat is for an indian...of course they will have the bigger quota as they most numerous applicants but ppl with lesser score and other nationality will get accepted coz there are less number of applicants and a university has to maintain a multicultural environment.

Those who are preparing for the test .....higher the score better it is...specially if you are from india.

Hi
Nija Dentist

Your words are highly appreciated....and its good to realize that you have shared your experiences wth all of us...appreciated really👍
Yes and as your advice goes i agree with you...firstly...experience in US...and secondly a very good statement gets u there...but for so many of us...SDN is the only medium to interract with friends who are in the same struggle...i have wworked on my SOP....and feel I have done a good job...same must be for every one who submits an application...but....u r right its best to know and learn from the statement of those who got accepted....so that we really know how good our job was? 😳
but u know...we really dont know how many people who got interviewed and accepted will be willing to share their statements...if all are ready to help i think one area where so many of us mess our application can be managed so well...

Any how...for your good words and suggestions....thanks a million...all the very best...
Cheers :luck: :luck: :luck:

hi rodent
how r u, i read your post, you have an awesome score of 95, so i am sure you are a sharp and intelligent person and of high caliber. and i agree with you nationality matters is some schools and competition is high amongst indians with schools like upenn. and i believe it is unfair but we must understand that they want diversity.........i have applied to all the schools offering advanced standing or spaced based programs in US and got 3 interviews and one acceptance so far , i am probably one of the fewest people with very avg stats on sdn to get in a program.and i am indian.
so i think it is best to have high scores, over 90 is definitely very good. but work exp matters a lot in most schools ,both in home country and in US, also if you have any other education in the US, i had 2 yrs work exp in india and 2 yrs in US, that helped me reach where i am.also SOP ,resume is very important , and so are clinical skills if your interview also has a clinical portion.most important is how one presents himself at the interview and shows clarity in thought and speech.......a personal interview brings out the diff between being accepted or not being accepted.
but at the same time there are schools that wunt accept gpa less than 3, there are schools that want diversity, so being indian there is a disadvantage unless you beat it with high score or somthing in your resume.some schools take only GC holders, while some lay emphasis on clinical work, so one has to see what is in favor of us.........there are so many criteria for acceptance and they are diff for every school, so one has to see where you fit in and hav a max chance.
with your awesome score and gpa i dunt think there should be a reason why you wudnt get in BU or NYU..........of course you wud hav a good chance elsewhere too.GOOD LUCK

thanks for appreciating godbless..i got accepted at BU right on the day of interview which was on 26th of oct..i am also waitlisted at upenn...what i wrote was about the level of struggle different ppl have to do because of different nationality...and to tell those who are preparing to be on there toes and not to take things for granted.

tptruston and rodent, your posts address an important subject. The real question is not how much nationality matters in selection, but whether a transparent process is being followed or not.

Univs like Penn have an established diversity policy, and univs like BU have an established policy that prefers academic merit over nationality/ethnicity. Neither approach is right nor wrong (in fact both have been criticized on this forum), but both let the applicant know what to expect. I appreciate these schools for making their stance clear, and as long as the same standard is followed for every applicant, I believe that each approach has its own merits.

Programs like UTHSCSA and Colorado that do not spell out their policies and leave their stance open to speculation, are the real villains. We go through their process, and come out wondering whether we wrote a good SOP, if our scores were competitive, if we had enough work experience, or if we said the right things at the interview. If rejected, we wonder if it's because of our nationality or some academic deficiency. If accepted, we rejoice, but comments of bias can leave a sour aftertaste. Any selection process that does not spell out its exact policies is always going to leave people dissatisfied. It is unfair to the applicant who is trying to find a good fit, and in the long term it will be detrimental to the school's reputation.

one or the other way round you have said the same thing i was trying to say..in my opinion rejecting ppl based on nationality is even a poorer idea than rejecting them over scores. May be i wanted to say the same thing you have said but i could not put it in the right words.

I don't think herodontist is making the same point as you rodent...he is advocating some form of transparency to the system. I believe herodontists is advocating that schools state their admisions policies a priori. You on the other hand are arguing for admissions on a scores-based system.

Your argument is not without merit, however, have u considered the number of Indians that apply for advanced standing programs yearly? Based on the numbers alone, the odds would be stacked such that the programs will be predominantly if not entirely populated by indians (its just statistics).
I think if you consider it this way, you'll begin to understand why some instituions subscribe to diversity-based selection systems.

There is a caveat however, to ensure that they are not admitting absolute dunces (and i'm not trying to be insulting) the schools usually have baseline scores/criteria that need to be met before the candidates are called for interview/selected eg score of 88 on iBT TOEFL for UCSF. So long as the individual meets this baseline score, (S)he may be considered for selection, it is after this stage that the nationality/ethnicity card then comes into play....

So if you really think about it, its not as discriminatory as it sounds. There is some form of equity at play in the system.

As an aside, standardized tests are not always the best predictors of performance...this has been proven in the case of MCATs, and SATs, by extension the NBDEs may not necessarily be exempt.

I agree with herodontist, schools should state their selection models, so that applicants better understand the nature of the competition.

ok now...both of you guys...I dont know where are you taking the discussion but again i wud say in the simpler words....chances to get in any university with a score below 85 and gpa below 2.5 and nationality of india is very less...unless you have a 10 yr experience or you have done some extensive research...if you still say i am wrong then cant help it.

You are probably right...the competition amongst Indians is stiffer.

But I would also like to say that the potential inference that Non-Indians that do get into these programs are somewhat less competitive should not be entertained.

I never intended to say that non indians have lesser potential if that is what you are saying....what i meant was your first sentence

guys....

lets not fight over this issue.....what everyone here is trying to prove is something that should have been or should be taken into consideration by universities in this country in order to be as FAIR as possible.....but since this is not possible and all of the univs have their own admission policies, which they feel are closest to being FAIR to every applicant, i feel that we should not get heated up over it......

but if you ask me.....i feel there should be something like MATCH for admission to International Dentist Programs (they already have the ADEA PASS application for US citizens)......and for the clinicals too there should be only one nationally accepted technical/clinical exam like the regional boards here(eg WREB,NERB,CA licensure exams, etc.. but ofcourse simpler and easier in format) so that all the universities have similar rules and regulations for admitting international dentists...and thus they can be equally fair to all applicants....

HGL🙂

i agree with HGL 100%..............

hi guys....

Sorry...haven't been around on SDN much ....am currently in India visiting my parents......

just received an email from Barbara that I am placed on the alternate list...she had sent me a letter about my status on 13th Dec by snail mail which got returned for reasons unknown....

nyways....i don't think ppl who have been accepted at UTHSCSA will leave their spot for reasons so obvious...first, it is a highly reputed school in both it's clinicals as well as research...second, living expenses are quite low when compared with the West or the East...third, donno about the others but I found that the program was pretty neat in organization and content, inspite of the fact that it's going to be their first year....but Dr Bohnenkamp is also a veteran in these affairs.....so definitely one is very lucky to get into this program...

well...congrats to those who have got in already....good luck to those like me, who are on the alternate list.....

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to say that I got accepted too 🙂 ...

Congratulations dentistcs on your accpetance. Looking forward to meeting you and everyone else who has been accepted in June!

Good luck HGL...hope you get in too!:luck:

Just thought it would be a good idea for all of us who have been accepted at UTHSCSA to get to know each other before classes start. Maybe via group emails? Let me know what you think or if you have any other ideas. Maybe we can begin to discuss accomodation, finances, preparation etc. So far, I know of the following SDN members who have been accepted:

Naija dentist
Nevio
Emrald
Dibbles
dentistcs

I know of one other non-sdn member who has also been accepted. So if any of you other four are out there...please make yourselves known!

It would be great if you could all PM me your email addresses and I will start a group email and send it to everyone so we can all introduce ourselves.

Hope to hear from y'all 😉 soon!

Great idea!
😉Count me in. Wish everyone good luck.

Hi HGL,
if that helps you in any way ....I can tell you that I am 99% sure that all the people that interviewed have been send the alternate list response-letter. All the ones that I know did, anyway....And like you said, there will be no candidate withdrawing from this program, so ......UTHSCSA will remain one of the best programs out there if you are at a certain level of proficiency already.
