Indeed, thanks for awnsering guys. For me, what it means is that I have 17 months until I am done with residency. 😀

CIC (well, at least for my class) was a blast. Granted, we were the first ones adn well, we spent alot of it drinking. (not me of course)

It was great.

Hell, if you aren't a gunner, all of first year is fun, except that week before phase. meck.

But you have *amazing* faculty first year.....

And that's not jst b/c one of them is my friend.

i already told txguy, but we're trying to put a weekend together for yall to come and check out apartments, parking, etc. and see the area (and meet some people). hopefully that'll shed some more light on the living situation than one man's humble opinion 🙂

I love this idea.

For anyone still in school -- I mean, this isn't exactly gunner talk -- but I just want to be done with undergrad and start med school like right now. Anyone feel like that?

Have to find a way to stay motivated for the next three months...instead of just looking into the future at gross & biochem, etc.

Lane,

I was wondering what the required computer situation is going to be. Is a computer required, and if so will they tell us a specific one, or just minimum specifications?

Thanks!
there's no computer requirement. a lot of people have laptops, which is nice since we have wireless internet all over the library and lecture halls, but it's not a necessity. some of the material they give you with the syllabus is on a CD but you can easily use it with an old computer or with the library computers.

i still use the crappy old Dell desktop i got my freshman year of college...and i haven't had any problems at all.

3rd year, though, you will need a PDA. that's a long time away so don't even worry about it now.

take the next 3 months to:
1) eat all the In N Out burgers you can possibly put down
2) enjoy the beach
3) enjoy sitting on the benches while watching sorority girls riding bikes to class

4) enjoy having a good football team 😀

Any issues with Macintosh computers? I have an iBook G4.

hmmm according to tech support there aren't any issues but i remember one prof saying the study stuff they gave us wouldn't work on a mac. it may have been the Galen program for gross anatomy (which uses Excel and macros and a whole bunch of other stuff i don't really understand), although you can easily use it on one of the library computers. i'll check tomorrow and give you more details.

I'm really thankful for all of the questions you answered for many of us throughout this process! 👍

I'm also glad that you're hear to continue to help us lost MS0's out!

I was going to ask you all the same thing. I haven't gotten mine yet, but mine is going to be sent to my parents house in Amarillo, quite a long ways from San Antonio. Hopefully they will be here tomorrow. I kinda want something official in my hands.

Imporant though, eh? 😉

Does anyone know if SA has match lists of previous 4th yrs? I looked in the folder they gave us during interviews, but only saw a breakdown of specialties people matched in.

I posted the match list for 2004 in the UTHSCSA Class of 2008 thread. I will try to locate it.

Morning all!

Met DizzyDog last night @ the Houston Post-Match shindig. Very cool fellow. 👍

We were talking about finding places to live, and thought that it might be a good idea if any of you current (or former 😉 )students could post about the good, bad, and in-between places to live. Thoughts?

Way to go guys!

San Antonio was my #1 choice and oh-man am I happy to get into it!
I have been reading the Texas threads in the corner for a couple of months now and wanted to let you know that they have really helped me out. Keep up the great posts with all the good info- there are alot of folks reading them in the corners like myself.

our class treasurer (a good friend of mine, former SDNer) lives in one across the street from the HSC. i love it since he lets me park there :meanie: i know he likes it a lot but he did have a lot of fixing-up to do when he moved in. it's a great investment if you plan to do some work on it and then sell it when you graduate; you can even lease some for fairly cheap. i will say, though, that you'd need to come check out the market pretty early because it seems like they get taken fairly quickly.

I wouldn't mind doing a home and splitting it 3 ways.

I guess I got a while but anyone who might be interested in something like that PM me.

Thanks for the residency match list as well! I wonder when they're going to replace the 2004 entering class list with 2005, so we can see the breakup of girls/guys and where everyone is from...

I'm getting far too excited and far too ahead of myself...but that website for the class of 2007 is a good idea. Scribe service online, directory, links to resources, advice for future classes. I know it's a ways off but I'm totally going to do something like that once we're all at school...

Wow, I really like this site! 👍

I hope we can get one together for the c/o 2009.

Lane--are we still going to have a peer adivising group? (20-25 people, led by a MS2) and a big sib?

Whoa. <6 months till the White Coat ceremony. 😀

I need to make a short-timer's calendar.

This was already brought up, but i was wondering if the school will wait to post the 2005 class list until after everyone turns in their letters of intent.
This would make sense to me, but I really hope it is released earlier. Anybody know anything?

*bump*
to page 1!

I have some questions for current 1st years:

1) What kind of changes will be made to our curriculum, if any? And/or what changes were made for your year? (I remember that UTHSCSA was more on the traditional side, and that lecture hours were being reduced?)

2) What is a typical day like for a 1st year? Are you in class basically 8-5 everyday?

Just curious 😀

Thanks!

R u thinking of near the med center? If so, what's the price range you're looking at?

Certainly on the northwest side close to the med center...I know med students do but I dont really know where they rent houses (on the other side of Babcock?)

I figure I would be spending 650 - 750 on a nice apartment near campus but someone was posting earlier on this board about three bedroom houses between 1200 and 1500 or 400 - 500 a person. Of course I gotta wait til I get back...but just seeing if anyone else might be interested in that...

Wow, I just stumbled across this site and saw this thread. It's awesome to see peers from San Antonio. I'm a freshman right now at UTSA...Hopefully if all goes well I'll be joining ya'll in a little over 3 years. Oh, and congrats!

Rec'd the acceptance letter today! 😀 😀 It's really real now! 👍

FYI, we need to have the Hep B series by the time we matriculate ("July 2005") and there's a two month interval between each of the three shots. If we don't have that series done by then we can't matriculate. So go schedule an appointment right away!

For about three years I kept getting the first, second and then I would forget to get the third shot since it was 2 or 3 months from number 2. So after about 6 shots total I go in and just ask them to titer me. Well, I have enough anti-Hb to protect us all.

1) yall don't have CIC and you're finishing 2 weeks earlier than we are this year, so your academic year will be reduced by 6 weeks. they're also redoing the CIC during the year so you have less time committed to that as well as removing histology lab (you'll get a nice DVD instead). the classes will be more system-oriented so that you'll have less overlap - it should flow a lot more nicely through the year. the only thing that sucks for yall is your last 6 weeks, where you'll have nothing but neuro. it's a lot of stuff in a short period of time. there will probably be some growing pains but your curriculum will be more like the current MS2 curriculum, which most everyone agrees makes more sense and works better than our current MS1 curriculum.

2) the amount of time you spend in class depends on you. i can't say for sure what your schedule will look like yet but usually you only have 1-2 required hours per day, if that. tomorrow i'll be in class from 9-4 but friday it'll be 8-2...so it changes from day to day (and depending on whether you actually go to class)

come march 1 we won't have gross lab anymore, which will make our afternoons MUCH shorter 😀

i'll probably be paired with the lone person from Emory 😳 they usually take your undergrad school into consideration (unless you specifically tell them not to...or request someone in particular)

According to the letter, they are due on February 16. Now, whether that is the postmark date or the arrival date, I am not sure....

Well it's been awhile since I have been on here, but I am glad to see that a few of the people I remember are going to be my future classmates! I think I am still in quite a bit of shock about all of this. Congratulations to all of you guys and I'll see you July 24th. By the way I am in SA working right now, so if anyone wants to meet up let me know!
