UTHSCSA Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
looks like we have a fellow emory alum 😉

i don't think it makes a huge difference - i've had verizon for years and haven't had any problems with them. i don't know if you're into getting the latest, sweetest phones or if you're just looking for simple talk coverage. if the former, you may want to go with cingular or stay with t-mobile. if the latter, it may not really matter at all.

I have sprint with free roaming and walking around campus it seems to work okay. EVDO (high speed internet also works). There are some low signal spots but the phone will roam to another providers network (e.g. Verizon). Get the sprint sero plan 😍 I pay < $30 / month for 500 minutes with internet, unlimited text / data with free roaming nationwide.

Wait until you get here and get your student i.d. Then you can join Gold's Gym (they have several quality facilities around the campus) for ~$21/month.

Wife and I moved yesterday. I've got the ID. So apparently Texas Star Cafe doesn't have a student discount but they do take VISA/MC. She said there is another place that does though - she didn't know the name. On a side note - I'd highly recommend getting the Citi mtvU card - you get 5% cashback (TY pts) for eating out, books, movies and such.

So isn't it odd you don't have to log in to use the machines in the library - or did I just take over someone's session 😕 The large LCD displays are nice!

What is a TRAC account card? The guy on the counter said I can use my student ID and don't need a library card.

So I parked in Lot 11 when I came to campus this morning. It's quite a hike, or maybe I've gotten lazy

I'm leaving the Vintage, which was a totally awesome, but pricey place to stay because i'm running out of money and i need to sell my brand new couch from Ashley Furniture and Ikea dining table and chairs, if anyone's about to come stay at the vintage, it'd be ideal for both of us, i'll be leaving mid july-ish but can live without it, haha, email me at [email protected] if you're interested

yeah haha. emory alumn as of this year actually. class of 07. actually i'm glad to be out of that place. haha. i missed texxas....

I haven't received any information about the white coat ceremony. Do we need to buy our white coat beforehand?

No. They'll have them there for you when you get there.

When is the ceremony this year?

Keep the fingers crossed. I'll probably be down sept/oct
:luck: I'll cross all of my fingers, toes, and other parts for you.

Hrm...Sept I'll be on psych. Oct-Nov covers my surgery rotation [I'm thrilled, of course. 😀]. We'll have to have lunch or dinner when you come into town.

Hi guys. I had a random question, and I was wondering if yall could give some feedback. What cell phone company has decent coverage in SA? I'm only asking b/c i was in Atlanta for four years and I had tmobile, and I got reception nowhere. Now i'm wondering if I should renew the contract since it works fine here in Dallas. Any opinions? ThankS!

I think Cingular (now AT&T) is the best for around the med center. I always get reception in the med school and the basement (where the MD labs are). I know verizon doesn't get any reception there and sometimes roams outside of the lecture halls. The only place I don't get great reception is in my steal mesh trap of an apt (Melograno) - gotta love stucco buildings.

In fact, they'll call everyone up on stage about 5 at a time and the first time you'll see your coat is when the faculty coats you. Don't worry, most of us looked silly . . . those coats are definitely made for men. 🙂

And seating fills up quick, so get there early.

Hi guys! I'm joining this thread a bit late hehehe but I will see you all at the white coat ceremony!

I'm in Berlin now so I've had to take care of everything by phone/email hehe. Been kinda tricky but I think everything has worked out nicely. Just need to lock down some temporary housing until I can score a decent place close to the med center.

I was sad to miss the welcome weekend but the damn airfare was killer from here haha.

I'm uber excited to start!!!!!

It may be a shot in the dark, but any University of Rochester alums here?😀

i'm not a rochester alum but my boyfriend's brother just graduated from there...

I have an odd request, but here goes. I'm in charge of getting people to respond to the 31 question's thread in the mentor forum and am looking for current students at all of the med schools of the US. So, I realize this is the class thread for the incoming class, but perhaps someone from previous classes has been helpful in answering your questions and giving you advice in this thread. I have no time to read through every single class thread to get this info, but if you could post some user names of some such people (or pm them to me, including what school you are from), I can pm them with my request. Thanks!

can you provide a link to the thread? we 4th years are a lazy bunch... 😀

Well no one's written anything on here in a while, wanted to see if that means everyone's already moved in and just haven't set up internet yet.

Almost over the butterflies before school starts again, see all of you in a few weeks!

Yikes! Best of luck and hope everything goes smoothly.

I've finally locked in an apartment literally right next to the med center 😀

Been thinking about how to furnish it now (the fun part hehe).

I gotta call the school for the white coat ceremony details... for some reason I didn't get mailed the info so I just only know the day and time.

See y'all in a few weeks!

Check you school's email. Dr. Lee sent out the details and also an RSVP. If you didn't get it let us know (PM me) and I'll forward it to you.

Has anyone else noticed we're registered for classes? What's with the "non-graded" portion of histo/gross/neuro lab and the micro seminar? Interestingly the on becoming a doc is a pass/fail course. The large number of instructors per course is interesting too. In this situation who writes the test up?

EDIT: On furniture, if you're looking for brand new and like the european look check out Copenhagen. They are on the expensive side though. Alternatively for less expensive stuff look at the noticeboards around campus, craigslist, garage sale, salvation army, etc.

the lab grades are part of the lecture-based class' grades. for example, in gross anatomy lab you will have 3 pimp sessions over your dissections. rather than make those their own grades, they are simply tagged as part of the gross anatomy course's final grade.

everyone takes the same classes 1st and 2nd years at the same time, so you're all pre-registered. you will start to choose what you want to do 3rd year.

OBD should be pass/fail.

the course directors write the exams. every course has a huge number of lecturers, who speak on topics of their respective expertise. they submit exam questions to the course director, who then edits then compiles them into a test.

First of all, for all of you who are incoming first years, welcome to San Antonio. You are about to start the craziest thing you've ever put your self through, but it's totally worth it (and it can actually be fun). I can say that now because I've finished the hard part, but it's true. Anyway, I'm a fourth year and I am getting married soon and have a bunch of furniture and books to sell.

hunter green fluffy couch with beige slip cover $100
matching love seat and slip cover $75 (or both for $150)
medium stain wooden coffee table $25
matching end tables $15 each
mattress and box springs (7 years old) $100
papazan chair with green cushion $30
light stain wooden desk about 4 feet long $40

I also have tons of books from the last three years that I will post separately, but let me know if you are interested.....

Where is everybody? Facebook group?

I'll just let this sentiment percolate and echo off these walls unheard, I am ready to get it on. A little nervous but mainly because I don't want to give up the unemployed, no responsibility life that I have led the past few months....but I guess it's for the best.

If any of you are in town and want to meet for a happy hour or if you run low on food I will a. buy you a drink or b. cook a piece of meat for you (maybe some green beans or broccoli). Lookin' forward to the ride.

If anyone on here is interested in/has not heard about the retreat planned for tomorrow at Chalk Bluff please shoot me a message. It might be posted on facebook if you are in that group.

Take care,

Hi, what is everyone doing about books? Should we try to buy them for cheaper online? Or should we just wait till orientation week and buy them all at the bookstore. I'm not sure what is needed for sure and what isn't. Thanks.

Or....buy them the cheapest from the current MS2s. They'll be selling them once you get to campus.

Note: I am an MS3 and I'm not selling anything. 😉

Orientation in 3 days! :barf::wow: I just pooped myself a lil' bitt. Okay.... a lot! Incontinence BLOWS.

Is everyone at the retreat?

the school has IM leagues - most classes will form teams. ben rivers is the IM coordinator through the student life office. he'll send out info when it's time to sign up.

there are also pickup games for basketball and soccer but the exact days tend to change from year to year.

This is probably in one of the emails but what time and where are we supposed to report for orientation tomorrow?

orientation starts at 8am in the HSC auditorium!

also, due to unforeseen events, i am living in a 2-2 by myself. if anyone needs or knows someone who needs a place to stay (female) please let me know! i live at san antonio station apartments!
