I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this.

UTHSC-SA was my first interview so I was pretty nervous and missed some details of the presentation that day.

I currently have a deposit down and am trying to decide whether or not to attend my
Mich interview in a few weeks. Mich is closer to home and I'm used to the cold weather, but I think San Antonio might be the stronger program and a bit cheaper. How do the two compare in terms of specialization rates? Does anyone have any strong opinions about one or the other?

If you're a Texas resident, which I assume you are, you'd be silly to turn down any Texas school for an out of state one. Unless you just HAVE to go to Harvard or Columbia. The difference in cost is quite a bit, like you said. San Antonio is a great school. If you were meant to specialize, you'll specialize anywhere you go. Go to SA. 👍

And didn't they tell at the interview not to call them UTSA? lol

Haha oops, edited 🙂

SA students struck me as more dedicated, mature, and knowledgeable compared to the other schools I was accepted to. This is why I ultimately chose to deposit there. Anyways I'm OOS for both there and mich, so I believe cost is similar. Does that change your opinion at all?

It's about 313K for Michigan vs 250K for San Antonio if you're out of state for both. I'm still going with SA. I'm slightly biased because I'm from Texas and I think our schools are just as good as any out of state ones. You have a chance to do anything at any of them as long as you work hard. Living expenses in Texas is also dirt cheap and can't be beat.

There's some slight talk on SDN about Michigan not being as good clinically as it used to be. It's become more dental research orientated. Granted, you'll still get a good education but since Ann Arbor is in a relatively wealthy area, you're not going to get as much experience with patients. Supposedly if you're from Michigan, UDM is the place to go if you want to be a good clinician because it's in Detroit. Once again, just what I've noticed from being on SDN. Someone can flame me later for hating on Michigan lol
