I was wondering if there is time during the winter break to go on vacation/visit family? I didn't know if students usually stay around school for any reason, or if most go do personal stuff. How long is the winter break?

About 3 weeks. I went home for the vacation and worked at the same place I work every vacation. Other people stayed at school. Depends on your preference.

There is an opportunity to work in the large or small animal hospital for a week or two during Christmas break as well. You are paid, but it's not a lot. It's so the fourth years can have a Christmas break, too.
