First post ever!
I was accepted to UNT/TCOM back in November. I love it there. I found a great apartment right across the street from school. Fort Worth's awesome, etc... Thursday I came off the waitlist at UTMB and I have no idea what to do. I liked Galveston, the curriculum and especially the 1/2 day schedule (TCOM's scheudle is pretty rough). What would you Texans do in my situation? Would you go to UTMB simply because it's MD and not DO? I know they're equivalent degrees but I haven't seen anyone directly compare TCOM to other Texas schools.
Thanks for any thoughts! I normally don't ask strangers questions like this but I'm torn. 😕

UTMB without a doubt. TCOM is great but UTMB would be better, barring anymore hurricanes for the next four years. Plus, unless it's changed UTMB is still cheaper than TCOM by a wee bit.

Forget the MD vs DO business ...which school is the best fit for you?

I have never been to Texas, except to DFW airport, but for some reason I get the impression that Dallas-Ft. Worth would be the nicer place to live. As far as MD vs. DO, I've heard that TCOM is about as good as DO schools come.

Thanks for the comments!
I realize that only I can really answer this question. I forgot to mention that I'm doing the Air Force route, so cost won't be an issue since they're paying for the tuition. I just need to decide where I'll fit best, which is obviously very difficult at this point. 🙂
Thanks and good luck everyone.

congratulations, and wow off a waitlist in April? I'll have to remember that.

I would be thrilled to go to TCOM, but the acceptance to UTMB and the half days is pretty sweet.

Well, other than the apartment, you don't really seem too attached to TCOM. Galveston really is a nice place, from what I saw while visiting, and you said yourself that you liked the curriculum there. Everything points to UTMB over TCOM, no sense in holding that TCOM acceptance. And I'm sure you've heard it before, but getting a US MD can open more doors for the most competitive specialties. This isn't about being inferior/superior/unequal, it's just the practical decision. Oh, and congratulations!

(If you have some serious family obligation to stay near Dallas/FW, and it's impractical for you to leave that region, TCOM is considered one of the best DO schools and supposedly has really good USMLE pass rates (as well as COMLEX) and does have really good match lists. It's certainly not a bad choice, but UTMB is probably the better option)

UTMB no question. They bounce between #1 and #2 in highest average USMLE Step 1 scores in Texas year after year in the last 5 years.

No, I don't doubt that, I was just saying if there was outside factors involved that the OP didn't add in, TCOM isn't a bad school at all. I agree with you that UTMB is the better option.

This was great advice.
Everything else everyone said was extremely helpful too! Thanks everyone and good luck!
