UTSW is a malignant program?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I heard that the working hours for resident is way over 80 hours.

Parkland is hardcore in general. Super insane patient volume and diversity. In the past, their medicine program was legendary for having their residents see unending hordes of patients.

I wouldn't necessarily equate that with "malignant." However you probably need to know what you are getting in to. Their neuro program director, Dr. Vernino, seems pretty chill.

A lot of good academic programs have pretty heavy work loads. I'm too early in my residency to know if this is good or not, but I am becoming increasingly convinced that medicine is highly, highly experiential. As an intern my mastery of book material seems vastly underrated relative to the knowledge that comes with having seen a problem multiple times on the floor.

Disclaimer: Current UTSW resident

Our ward services can be very busy, but to describe our program as malignant is the furthest from the truth. Dr. Vernino is very willing to listen to suggestions for tailoring the program in the residents' interests. None of our faculty are the type to really hold you up to the fire or publicly berate you.

There are some weeks as a PGY2 that I probably went over 80 hours, but on average it was certainly less, as I am sure is the case at most programs with a large volume.

PM if you would like further details on our program.
