UVa and Neurosurgery

No one from UVa has matched into neurosurgery program for the past 3 years.. www.med-ed.virginia.edu/handbook/residency/match

Should I look into other schools, if I really want to do neurosurgery? (I'm currently applying for 2008 cycle)

We have a very active neurosurgery interest club that gets world class neurosurgeons to come in and give talks at least once a month. I know at least a couple of people in my class who are interested in neurosurgery and are currently shadowing neurosurgeons here. As for people not matching, that really confuses me. Maybe some people are doing a pre-lim year before neurosurgery residency? I know there is an active interest in that field here so I wouldn't completely discount UVA. I can give you the contact for the neurosurgery interest club president if you want, she would probably know more about it than me considering I have no interest in that field whatsoever. Good :luck: with the application process!

You could take the traditional route of getting good board scores, doing well on clinical rotations, and publishing research.

Or you could just go to a different school. Whatever.

You shouldn't consider a school by its match list what-so-ever. You'll be able to match in any specialty going to any school so long as you are competitive for that specialty. UVA hasn't matched neurosurg in 3 years? So what? It's more likely that no one decided to apply neurosurg rather than no one matching. Match lists are match lists, and no matter what will not matter to your future performance. You may not even like NS after a surgery rotation, or even shadowing. Just choose the school you like best, everything else will fall into place. Best of luck to you.

For neurosurg...don't you have to do gen surg first...maybe that's whay it's not showing up on the match list...

Are there any other surgical specialties showing up?

Neurosurgery is not a general surgery fellowship. Most programs these days have all of their training integrated, some may still require one year GS that you match on your own, I'm not certain, maybe check out the nsgy forums

I thought Neurosurg was all categorical internships now?

Gotta love people who know they want to do neurosurgery before taking a day of classes in med school. The neurosurgical threads on this site see nothing but 14-year-olds inquiring about how much money they'll make when they're "clipping aneurysms."

90% of my class was going to be a "brain surgeon" during orientation. When all's said and done, one person per year actually goes into it... and it isn't because the rest aren't capable.

OP, don't choose your school based on the concerns you've posted.

Match lists show the preferences of the students of any given year. Most likely, no one WANTED neurosurgery in the past 3 years. Dr.John Jane is about the best recommendation for neurosurgery in the country and the program at UVa is one of the top neurosurgical residencies in the nation. I have two friends who are currently residents in that program and I know that Dr. Jane takes very strong interest in any medical student at UVa who is interested in neurosurgery and makes sure that they get a good match if they have the grades.

Neurosurgery is such a small field that many medical schools don't send anyone into it. I don't know the actual numbers, but I would guestimate there are 300 spots yearly. With a specialty that small a school could very easily not have anyone go into simply because there isn't the interest. You can go into neurosurgery from any school in the country.
