i have an interview on oct. 25 and i'm looking at flights into cho, but the costs seem pretty high (i'm coming from either st. louis or kansas city). the tickets i've found are no less than 450 without tax.

so does anyone have any advice on how to get there as cheap as possible?

what about flying into dulles and renting a car or taking a shuttle? how many hours away is uva from dulles?

thanks.

Well, UVa. is about an hour and a half from dulles, give or take. A cheap, but time consuming way is to arrive by train or bus. Charlottesville has an Amtrak stop as well as a Greyhound station right in the middle of town, just a few minutes taxi ride from main grounds. I know that Dulles has shuttles to Charlottesville, but I don't know how much they cost.

Hope that helps you somewhat! 🙂

UVA is about 2-2.5 hours from Dulles, VA (maybe a little less depending if you choose to obey the speed limit or not ;p)...

Flying into Dulles and renting a car may be your best bet if you want to cut down on the cost of the trip. Otherwise, if you can foot the bill, flying directly into Charlottesville would be the way to go.... the drive from Northern Virginia to C'ville is awful... and I wouldn't attempt to drive down the morning of either... fly in the day before, drive down and stay overnight.

Hey, I was wondering the same thing. My interview is tentatively set for October 28th, but I'm traveling from NYC. If I took the train down, how far is it from the station to UVA? Is UVA's medical campus separate from the main campus? Thanks 🙂.

if you're traveling from NYC why not drive. I drove from Atlanta and that's twice as long as the drive from NYC. It's definitely doable and the cheapest way as well. Getting on a train would take just as long and be pretty expensive as well.

I don't know how long it takes from NY, but from Baltimore it takes me 3 hours, if they don't screw something up. The medical campus is right next to main campus ("grounds"), in fact it's right behind the Lawn. Hey, congrats on the UVa. interview. Charlottesville is pretty interesting. 👍

Hey, I had an interview there this week. I actually flew into BWI Airport(Baltimore Washington Intl) and took Amtrak from BWI Rail Station to C'ville. (Amtrak $48)

You can also fly into Reagan National Airport, take the metro from Reagan National Metro Station to Union Station (train station) in Downtown DC, and take Amtrak from Union Station to C'ville. (Metro $1.75, Amtrak $24)

C'ville Amtrak station is only five-ten min cab ride ($5) from campus, and the med campus is right next to the main campus.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,
Fly into any of the Washington, DC airports and take ground transportation to Union Station. You can take the Washington Flyer bus between Dulles Airport and National Airport. You can take the MARC train from BWI to Union Station in DC and then take AMTRACK to Charlottesville. You can also do the car rental thing but beware of rush hour. The DC rush hour is one of the worst in the country and driving from DC (Dulles or National Airports) down to Charlotteville during rush hour adds a couple of hours to a 2.5 hour trip.

Any flight into and out of Charlotteville-Albemarle Airport is very expensive. We only use that airport if there is nothing else available. Another option is to fly into Richmond, rent a car and drive one hour on 64-West (about 50 miles) to Charlottesville. You may be able to get a fairly cheap flight into Richmond.

Hampton Inn and the Red Roof Inn are located within walking distance of the medical school which is next door to the Medical Center. UVA also has a Best Western on campus that is a short cab ride to the medical center. The AMTRACK station is a short cab ride to the medical center and medical school. Other hotels are located along Routes 64, 29 and 250. You can take your choice as all are a short distance from the medical center/medical school (Charlottesville is just not that big).

Good luck!
njbmd 🙂

Just to add to what has been said, flying into CHO is very expensive. You can fly to Dulles and take Greyhound to CHO for about $18.00 oneway. (Should be cheaper if round trip). There is only one Greyhound bus that leaves Dulles everyday (around 7:30pm, check Greyhound for updated info). OR you can fly to Reagan and go to union station and take AMTRACK or Greyhound from there to CHO (this is more time consuming). Both AMRTACK and Greyhound stations in CHO are a few minutes from campus,( few bucks by taxi).
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for your responses 🙂 😍 !

Richmond might be an option. It's just over an hour car ride from Charlottesville, so closer than D.C.

i think i'm just gonna fly into c'ville. it's 300 bucks total if i fly in on saturday and leave on monday, and that way i can go and see monticello on sunday. for comparison, flying to dc would be about 200-220, then i'd have to deal with the train/bus/car issue, which isn't worth it.

i'm hoping to get a duke interview this week, though, so i can arrange them at the same time and just borrow my brother's car and drive to c'ville. that would save me a lot of money. 👍
