Hey guys,
I'm officially in a position that I never thought I'd be in: having to decide between two med schools. I'm definitely going to make this decision with my family and my heart but I thought it couldn't hurt to hear some thoughts from people who may have actually been to one or both of these schools.

The story is that I went to UVA undergrad and will be considered in-state if I go there for med school. I'm a diehard Wahoo (UVA fan) and I am definitely more comfortable in a laid back college town like Charlottesville. On the other hand, I'm not totally sure I want to spend four more years in a place where I'm 100% comfortable.

I'm also in at Tulane. Historically, I'm definitely not a city person but I was definitely attracted to New Orleans. The students seemed really happy and laid back and the faculty all seemed like they wanted to contribute to the rebuilding of New Orleans (if they didn't, I'm sure they would've gotten the hell out of there a long time ago). The obvious drawback to Tulane, however, is the cost. It will cost me about $16000 more per year after all is said and done. Not that ranking means too much, but it seems sort of counter intuitive to pay more for a school that is not ranked as high.

Anyway, those are the thoughts that I'm currently batting around in my head and it has definitely been therapeutic to put those thoughts into words. Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

PS. I was hoping to make my decision based on what school won their basketball game yesterday. UVA got trampled by Boston College and Tulane lost to Memphis after fighting valiantly. No help there.

UVA + $64k = no brainer...

First of all, congrats on your acceptances!

For me... I think medical school is going to be an incredibly grueling experience, no matter where you go, so fit is incredibly important. If you can, I think it would be good to visit the schools again and get a feel for the students and the environment. If you really think Tulane is a better fit for you, then maybe the extra money is worth it to have a better experience (since this is the next four years of your life and all).

That said, i don't know that i would be able to turn down in state tuition (getting no love from the UC system, so at least i won't have to make that decision), but for me i think you should go to the school that will make you the most happy (if that's possible in med school 😛)

uva no question
you're comfortable there and it's cheaper

i dont see the downside other than trying to turn something good (being comfortable) into something bad.

stay at deal ol' uva please...

from one wahoo to another. Mr. Jefferson would be very very very disapointed in you.
