Edit: I have made a decision. Thanks everyone!

I don't think that is entirely fair if you look at Hofstra's match list (ortho surg, thoracic, neurosurg, plastics, derm, anesthesiology). Also Northwell has Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat (where many of the most prominent plastic surgeons in the country are practicing). It is my personal opinion that it is wrong to act like OP can't have a competitive speciality or academic medicine from Hofstra.UVA is an international refugee center and serves a wide area, so it has more diversity than you’d think, from what I hear. UVA didn’t specifically talk about their research when I interviewed, but they are pretty established and have lots of research going on. Its residencies are very academic as well.
I also interviewed at Hofstra, but I didn’t like the sound of their curriculum. Wasn’t a big fan of the EMT certification, and I am pretty sure they have mandatory classes which seemed to be lectures. Even though its in LI, it’s definitely close enough to NYC that you could hang out there pretty frequently, one of the M1s said that they had gone to Manhattan every weekend lol.
I guess it depends on 1.) if you are interested in competitive specialties, and 2.) how important location is for you for the next 4 years. If your goal is to practice a relatively non-competitive specialty in a community setting, Hofstra’s connection to Northwell would probably be better for you. Not that academics from Hofstra would be impossible - just harder. I would love to practice in/near NYC, but I am also interested in academics which made me lean towards UVA.

I appreciate the feedback! Definitely agree, however I am a little hesitant that UVA might open more doors for career options in the future. I guess it is hard to pass up on prestige vs. a location I love.
