UVA
Pros-
-Top 30
-Much closer to home (I'm from VA)
-Good student culture from what I can tell. I like the 4-college system. The students seem super happy and enthusiastic about the school.
- Love the clinical opportunities: longitudinal clinical exposure, patient-student partnership, etc.
- very good reputation, matches well.
- Weather is nice, I like seasons.
-Option to do rotations in INOVA Fairfax (I'm from NOVA)
-Cheaper tuition ($50,000), far lower cost of living
- Pass/fail, team-based learning
-beautiful campus and facilities
-supportive faculty
-Into social justice/health equity
Cons
- I would prefer to live in a big city with a lot more diversity. I've never actually been to Charlottesville so I don't know how much I'll like it.
UCSF
Pros
- Top 3, very high ranking
- Very into social justice/health equity
- social justice/health equity mission
-very supportive faculty, tons of opportunities, strong student wellness
-I hear the work life balance is very good compared to other med schools
- Good weather
- pass/fail
-longitudinal curriculum, small groups, etc.
Cons
- Extremely far from home
- Extremely expensive (housing and other)
-I have some medical issues and all my physicians are in VA.
-Tuition is a bit more expensive ($57,000) but honestly not by much?
Summary: Both schools seem very strong to me, and I like both curriculums a lot. Both schools seem to have most everything I'm looking for in a medical school. I don't think I can go wrong either way. Money is fortunately not too much of a concern for me, so I think the main thing is whether or not I'm willing to move so far away. Anyone have any thoughts?
