As a current 4th year UVA med student applying to anesthesiology. I highly recommend the program. The faculty and residents enjoy working together; the quality of the teaching and relationships certainly led me from hating on anes to applying to it. Residents generally seem pretty happy, only have noticed them hating on some of the open ICU rotations because of too many teams putting in orders or not. Epic should be solidly in place by this summer.
Residents seem quite happy. The program is solid and Charlottesville is a great place to live. Definitely a small town but tons of restaurants and outdoor opportunities. Ranked a top place to live in the US. I am not sure about the numbers/case acuity but certainly we have a good general surgery service and a couple great surgical subspecialties. From what I remember seeing, the residents were particularly happy with regional exposure and TEE. I think there may be fewer peds cases since we don't have high volume peds surgeries, but I dont think a problem meeting quota.
Looking at your post again, I have no idea what the "controlled iv day" post would be about. I rotated in the dept for 5 weeks as well as hanging out with them during 6 weeks of ICU and some of OB/GYN. I thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone and was routinely impressed with the anesthesiology department. This impression is echoed throughout my class.
I know there are plenty of arbitrary reasons going into each rank list, but I really think it is a great program. And hard to beat 6 mo anes intern year...
Good luck with the match.
