I was filling out the Vermont secondary and noticed that they want a full year of orgo lab. My first-semester orgo course didn't have a lab included, but my second semester one will (I'm taking that this year). I'm not sure what they want me to do--I don't exactly feel like taking an advanced organic synthesis class just to fill this prereq. Any ideas?

Some schools let you just take a lab course. A friend of mine did this to complete her requriements. She talked to the prof and explaniend her situation. Yes, 1 yr of Orgo labs seems to be the std requirement for most med schools.

Is your 1 semester lab only 1 credit? Alot of times the requirement is 1 year or 2 credits. At my school one semester of lab was 2 credits, so a lot of pre-meds only took one semester, thus fulfilling the requirement. I would ask your pre-med advisor about the situation, there must be other people at your school in the same boat.

i talked to a BU adcom and i asked him the same thing, cause at my school my lab was 3 credits and you had to take it after I and II. he said that should be fine with most schools. as long as it covered material from both levels. i dont know how they would be able to know if it did or not though...mmm....but i think as long as its more than 1 credit you should be ok.

I'd agree with the rest of this thread - unless your organic lab was only one credit, you shouldn't need more than one lab course. Mine was two credits, and plenty of people from my school have gone on to medical school with nothing more.

Could you use an inorganic lab to complete the 1 year requirement?

mine was 2 quarter units = 1.333 semester units. Would UVM accept this or do I need to put another planned orgo lab? thanks

same issue I just posted..what if its 2 quarter units = 1.3 semester units. any insight would be appreciated.

I think you should definitely check with your schools pre-med/health advisor. At my school, lectures are worth 4 credits and labs are worth 2 credits, yet all pre-meds are required to take 2 semesters worth of lab for every science to get the pre-health committee to write a recommendation letter. It may stink to have to take an advanced course to get the requirement out of the way, but after all the work you've put in, it would stink to get rejections because of a lack of a semester of orgo lab.
