Uw Class Of 2011 Acceptance Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i got the package with the formal acceptance, and it says that we are required to finish all prerequisites, do you know if there a certain grade that we are supposed to get in those classes or is just to pass? because USC makes everyone get nothing lower than a C not even a C- is allowed.

Count me in🙂

as far as I know, with SDN, with my friends, and other resources, I count 8 people who have been accepted. I'm sure there are more, but pretty anxious here. 😀

As far as I know, there's a single person at WSU who has been accepted, and I only know of one other who's had an interview, so...

I would just call or e-mail them to see if there is a minimum grade for individual pre-reqs. I'm fairly sure you have to pass and usually that means a C, but if you are worried you might not get a C in your prereqs I would call to have something concrete to work with. I'm finished w/ undergrad so I never thought twice about this.

I guess what it really comes down to is that, even though I'm thinking positive, there's a side of me that is worrying about being flat out rejected, or not hearing for months and months. I just wish I had been more personal in the interview, since I feel like all I talked about was academics.🙁

What did you guys talk most about in the interview??

my interview was mainly about my application, my community service, my vision and plans for my future in dentistry and that of the profession... didn't really discuss academics too much. it was mainly about my extra-currics now that i think about it. very low key...pretty conversational...don't lose hope just yet..there's still a good amount of time...i mean the deposit isn't even due until May...and its only $100..pretty cool. keep your head up man. btw, have you had any other interviews or acceptances?

Well i guess i mis-phrased that. I meant academic as anything besides personal stuff, like my life. Yea I think majority of my interview was about extracurrics, and dentistry. I just though what really made me unique was my childhood... Anyways, UW was my first and only interview. I'm still waiting on the other 5 schools I applied to. I think my semi-late application could have been the problem. Plus, my LOR went missing for like a month... So I had to send it to AADSAS and have them send it. 🙁

Just wanted to see who will be attending UW SoD this fall. Please list the school where you attend(ed) undergrad.

Getting back to the original thread, I will be at UW SOD this fall.
Undergrad at Pacific Lutheran University class of 2000.

i'm a UW undergrad, biochem major; *hopefully* will graduate this spring, lol.

I would estimate that about half of the class has been offered by now. Personally, I've heard of 5 other people from UW that got in now, not including myself. However, one of em is going to another school and others are still waiting on other schools... So there's still a bit of hope for all you people awaiting. 😉

I'm a 2005 UCLA grad and I'm pretty sure I will be in Seattle with you folks in the fall! 🙂

so far we've got 6 SDNers including myself that are planning on attending in the fall, there's got to be more out there.

As far as I know, there's a single person at WSU who has been accepted, and I only know of one other who's had an interview, so...

i had an interview there 2 weeks ago, and i'm from wsu so count me in!

i heard that it is a good idea to start dental school with loops, so that you get used to them while you are in school. is anyone thinking about buying loops for their first year??

loops? what are these loops you speak of?

loops? what are these loops you speak of?

magnifying glasses, that are designed especially for you that allow for awesome magnification and make you keep your posture straight. they are pretty expensive, around $1000, but i've heard from pretty much all dentists that they are really usefull and that you should start using them in dental school to get ready to them

For those who reside in Washington, is the weather really as bad as it is reputed to be? I've only visited once in the summer (which was gorgeous) and for my interview in the winter (wasn't as bad as I had expected, although it did snow in Seattle the day after I left)... Any insight would be appreciated!

the summers in seattle are nice. the winters are as bad as you can imagine. rain rain and ocassional snow.

I think it's a bit exaggerated. The summer here is amazing, and winter here is gloomy. But I like rain and I say it's refreshing and clean.😀

from about november thru probably late march/early april it does rain more times than not, but it is not really that bad. if anything it will lend itself to a little more studying/lab time, haha.. it never gets extremely cold which is nice. from about mid april through october/november it is gorgeous and the weather combined with the scenery is amazing. it never really gets crazy hot (usually high 70's to low 90's). we like to say the weather is bad so lots of people don't move here ( mainly from california 🙂 ) it isn't socal, but it is a little more like northern cal...minus the fog in SF🙂

do they have a lot of bears in Seattle? 🙄

do they have a lot of bears in Seattle? 🙄

bears live in the mountains and forests and only come into the city when they have to attend class or lab for dental school...other than that they hibernate with other bears😛

Where do you guys plan on living while attending school? Any suggestions for nice, affordable areas in the UW vicinity? Thanks!

I did my undergrad at UW. I noticed that a lot of the Health students (both Med and dent) live around Sand Point by Magnusson Park. There are a bunch of condos in the area and there is a bus line that runs all along Sand Pt. Rd. Seattle is a pretty expensive place to live.... affordable is relative though I guess.

I've been looking at condos in bothell, kent, kirkland, south seattle area, maybe bellevue... this depends on if I get accepted😛

My fiance and I have been saving up so we won't have to rent anymore👍

those are all great places to live, but for other people who are not buying a house with their fiance, kent and bothell are a little far. Kirkland is pushing it as well. I would recommend some places more near the university for incoming students. There are some other small areas like wedgewood, greenlake, or fremont that are fairly close to the school of dentistry, but still outside the university district which which is a nice plus.

The nice thing about UW/Seattle is that they have a pretty nice transit system. If you do choose to live somewhere like Bothel or across the water in Bellevue, there are express Sound Transit buses that make the commute a lot more manageable. Plus you get a UPass (transit pass) with your tuition.

If you are single you def would want to stick closer to the U-district ala Wedgewood, Sand Point, or Green Lake like mentioned above. When I talked with UW dental students it seemed like those that chose to live further away were more than likely married and weren't part of the "social" crowd b/c they didnt need to be. Going to class was more of a job to them.

Yes, I did find the Seattle transit system very convenient and easy to use while I was there... free busrides downtown! 👍

Thank you all for your input, it really helps because I didn't even know where to begin looking... Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

is the sandpoint area on the east side of UW campus or west side... I'm not familiar with that area. I was thinking of living either in the Commodore or the Allegro... mainly out of conveniece but the price tag is pretty insane. I've heard that some people live in the apts down by the water, just west of UWMC, but I don't know of any specific buildings people have lived in before. Anyone else got input about these places?

Sand Point is East of the U-District along the west shoreline of Lake Washington. Along those lines... you might be able to find affordable places along the outskirts of Laurelhurst (also East).

The apts you are talking about could be the graduate housing complexes just off of Pacific. Although there are also tons of apts between campus and the freeway (still considered U-district).

Freemont is further west past Gasworks park.

Wedgewood is more or less just over the freeway expanding North. Wedgewood (where Dave Matthews of DMB resides) eventually runs North into Greenlake.

thanks for the reply.

*bump*

Just got accepted today! See you all in the fall!
(Undergrad: University of Michigan)

Marinah, How did you hear? Phone call? Also, when did you interview and if you don't mind, what are your stats?

Congratulations! Look forward to meeting you in the fall🙂

Congrats!! Looking forward to meeting you in the fall. As mentioned before, what are your stats, when did you interview, and how meny other schools did you apply to/interview at? Are you from Michigan or a WA native?
Once again congratulations and welcome to UW SOD class os 2011!
Tim

bump, let's keep it going guys

Well, to answer your questions...I got a phone call. My undergrad. was done at the University of Michigan. I don't really have residency anywhere but I'm from California. I interviewed mid-December at UW. I also interviewed at 6 other schools. Stats, well... I don't give numbers but I'd say I did about average for UW.

Hey Marinah,
I think I interviewed the same day as you. Didn't you have a midterm the next day in Michigan? I was the big short-haired guy. I got accepted too, but I will be going to OHSU instead. Congratulations! UW is a great school! It was a tough decision for me.

thank you for opening a spot for us. 🙂

Excuse my anticipation, but if I were to be accepted to UW, what are some summer orientaition/ mandatory meetings that I need to attend? I am trying to book my flight to Europe, but I've heard about events during August-September, and I want to schedule around them. Thanks in advance.

BTW, someone is hogging this thread🙂

thanks Rennoz. That really means that I shouldn't keep my ticket for 29th...

hotrod0917, when did you get accepted?
