UW denied me :(...help I want to reapply

I am very sad...I got denied acceptance to UW. the problem is I did my undergrad at UCSD in biochem moved to Seattle after that to live, and applied to UW. My guess is that I was considered an out of state applicant. Also I really rushed in applying last year and did not do well in my DAT (PA 18/ academic 15/ QR 12..), add to that my science GPA sucks (2.45) and over all GPA (3.48). siggggghhhhhhh
I knew that I will not get in, b/c my DAT score was low. however I did not know that UW stopped meeting with denied applicants to discuss why they were denied. which I was hoping to do 🙁
I am planning on retaking the DAT before June and actually owning it. since I know how the test is now.
But the GPA problem ..I don't know what to do about it.
I am considering re-taking some science courses this summer at a junior college to help my GPA a little, but I don't know if thats a good idea or not. I am thinking of retaking microbiology in particular.
I have one year of dentistry work , I was a dental assistant
currently I am volunteering in a dental clinic at a homeless shelter "mission gospel" and I was a care giver for an elderly couple for over one year during college.
I am trying to do everything here, its just unfortunately i had a rough undergrad experience overall.
basically the two grades that hurt my GPA the most I think, I got an F in a virology class (I was very ill and had to miss a lot of school) its an upper division i believe like microbiology 2 or something. and I have a D in structural biochemistry ..just one guy taught it and I could not get his style I retook the class and got a C-.....most of my upper division sciences were C's unfortunately, it was rough at UCSD.
I don't want to do a masters in public health, i want to get in this following year at UW, it is frustrating and its affecting my health just thinking about it.
its my dream to become a dentist.
please help if you know anything about UW dental acceptance..Thank you very much

I think that you will need to get admitted to a post-bacc program and kill it, like seriously kill it. Then you will need to destroy the DAT, 22-23+. Your stats are working against you, itll be a journey... good luck tho

I didn't make it in my first time to UW, and had to end up retaking the DAT. The second time I ended up doing well and I didn't have to answer to the ADCOM on why my DAT scores were low. However, to get into UW you'll have to get a 20 or above on most sections. To address the GPA portion, you don't necessarily have to do a master's program, but if you're going to end up taking classes, then why not try to work toward a higher degree? Just my opinion. I wouldn't worry too much about you're dentistry experience and other extra curricular activities. If you focus on proving that you can do well in science courses and can handle the rigor of dental school at UW (by raising your DAT and GPA taking additional classes), then I think you can get into UW dental school. If you prove to them by working hard and greatly improving your application, they will see how bad that you want this and that you're willing to work your butt to not only get into dental school, but to succeed.

Having a dream/goal of becoming a dentist is a great start; however it takes effort to achieve that dream/goal. In my opinion, UW is one of the premier dental schools on the West Coast. It is not an easy program to get into whether you're in state or OOS. Look at the stats in predents, you will see people with far better GPA and DAT getting rejected.

You have two things going against you (GPA and DAT). Your science GPA is way too low (2.45). Let's be realistic, with that grade, they might not even give you a secondary (BTW, did they even give you a secondary this cycle?). You will need to retake micro and biochem and do WELL. I hear that UW pays attention to those classes. Since you're in Seattle, I would suggest taking those classes at the UW as a non-matriculated student. You need to at least get a B+ on those classes. This will demonstrate to them that you have the capability to handle upper level science classes.

I would definitely suggest that you retake your DAT and do extremely well on it. You need to get at least a 20 (preferably a 22+) on all sections in order to offset your low GPA.

I would also suggest that you apply early and to other schools (ones that are less competitive than the UW).

I am not saying that it is impossible for you to get into the UW SOD next year, but you really need to put A LOT OF EFFORT to improving your application, particularly your GPA and DAT. Your ECs look fine. Even with the improvements, there is no such thing as a guaranteed spot at the UW SOD or any dental schools. Again, take a look at predents and see that many qualified candidates have been denied admission to UW.

As others have mentioned, you need to improve two aspects to your application: DAT and science GPA.

1)You need to do well in the DAT as in 22+ in total science and 20+ in reading comprehension. You need to prove that you are a good standardized test taker and that you are capable in mastering science courses.

2)You mentioned taking JC courses to boast your science GPA, but you are working backwards if you do so. It is acceptable for students who did not take science courses before but for someone with a biology major/background, the school wants confirmation that you will be able to survive the rigorous science schedule in the "graduate" level, not community college. I understand it's easier said than done, but to make up your less-than-stellar science gpa you need to take and ace graduate level science courses that focus on D-School related courses such as biochem, microbio, anatomy, physiology, histology, pharmacology. If you are able to do so, D-school will understand you have changed and are capable to survive D-school. As a reapplicant I have learned that the schools not only want people who are devoted to Dentistry, but also people who are capable in excelling in didactic.

I am planning on retaking the DAT before the June 1st, I will also do the non-marticulated student at UW and register for the two classes: biochem and micro. I will also apply to a couple more schools, and maybe a masters program just in case.
