I just found out today that I have an interview at UW (not sure when yet, I need to call and schedule). I've been accepted to 6 great schools already, but this is my top choice. If you've interviewed at UW (Vishal_k32801, boboli_chef, swiminh20, legallyblond--that means you!!), please give me your advice!!! Anyone else who has interviewed is welcome to reply as well.

What kinds of questions do they ask? Was it laid back or more formal? Do they point out bad grades on your transcript (not that any of you had bad grades)? I've read the Interview Feedback, but I was hoping for more detail. Thanks in advance!!!
 
Bort is right. You have the experience, and it definitely shows, considering your large number of acceptances. UW's interview isn't radically different from any of the other nine I attended.
 
Thanks you guys. I guess I just believe you never can be too prepared.

Anyone else? Anything you have to say would be appreciated.

Just be yourself, go with confidance, don't express radical views.

Thanks VK! When did you interview? I heard they were kind of late this year, is that true? Did they mention anything like that or do you know how many they had already accepted when you interviewed? Also, how soon after your interview did you find out you were accepted.

UW is always late. I was contacted early but I picked up
the day for interview in January 2nd week because taking off
from school for UOP (3 days) and Harvard (3 days) was difficult.
Another 3 days for UW would have caused a major conflict
with classes and exams. Do not worry about UW, I am sure
you are going to get selected. All the best friend!

Thanks VK! I sure hope I get in. I just called and scheduled my interview for February 12th.
 
I interviewed with two people at the same time. They were very nice and I felt comfortable immediately. This was my top choice school and even though I had several interviews and a few acceptances already I was most nervous for this interview initially. I didn't get any high pressure questions. I was honest and myself. I really feel that is what they are looking for. Not superman. What impressed me the most was getting to meet with Dr. Steiner the Dean of student affairs for over an hour. There were two other applicants interviewing that day and we all met with him together. He was really cool, talkative, friendly. I felt like he was genuine in his concern for the students and their welfare. The new Dean seems to be implementing new things within the school to make life more tolerable during the first couple of years of dental school. The lunch with the a couple of 1st years and 4th years was informative. They were all very glad they chose UW. I had heard in the past about some "cutthroat" attitudes among profs. and students at UW but I did not get that feeling at all when I was there. I knew it was a good school going into the interview but I left more impressed than I thought I would be. The building itself is not as impressive as other schools that I interviewed at but the quality of education is excellent. Implants and rotary endo for example are regular parts of the curriculum unlike a lot of schools. You will do great. Post how it went.....

Thanks Swim!! I appreciate all of your feedback. I think I feel the same way you did. I've had several interviews already and many acceptances, but I still feel really nervous about this interview. I had heard some similar comments about the "cutthroat attitude" of some of the students and faculty. I'm glad to hear that may not be the case. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I enjoyed your post and it helped a lot.
 
Thanks legallyblond. It's nice to know what to expect. It looks like I may have a few low grades to explain, but other than that, I hope I will be fine. I spoke with Kathy Craig this morning and she couldn't tell me how many spots were left, although she did say they would be interviewing at least until the middle of March. She said they were just "chugging along." I appreciate all of the feedback. Keep it coming!!!

Oh, one more thing--does anyone know about the student housing for married people, i.e. Radford Court, Laurel Village, Blakeley Village??? I saw how affordable they are, but how nice are they? Do you have any recommendations of other places for me to look at when I come for my interview???

I'm an undergrad at UW, and a couple of my friends live in Radford Court. It's really far from campus (at Sand Point), but it's a quick approx. 10-minute bus ride to campus. It's really nice. Theirs is a two-bedroom, and it has a nice living room, dining area, kitchen, bathrooms... I've seen one of the one-bedroom apartments there too, and it's nice. Much better than UW's dungeonesque dorms (which I'm currently stuck in 😛)

I think I've seen either Laurel or Blakely Village... one of them is on the other side of the athletic fields. Both are a tad far from campus (as in, just barely under walking distance), but tons of buses stop in front of the med center, and any bus would take probably 5ish minutes. I'm pretty sure UW gives UPASSes to professional students too. It's like $35, which is automatically charged with your tuition (at least for us undergrads), and it gives you free reign on Metro, Community, and Sound Transits, plus a few other perks like discounts at various stores (i.e. 8% off at Tower Records 🙂)

for other places, you could check out the U-district, there's lots of housing. Plenty of houses and apartments west of University Way, from about 40th to 55th or so. You could also check out the Ravenna and Wedgwood districts. They're both north of the U-district and would be short bus rides to campus.

Thanks for the great info!!! Did you see the insides of Laurel or Blakely??? Can you tell me what those are like? I plan on checking them out when I go to my interview, but if it's not worth it, I'll check out other places. Let me know what you think. Radford Court looks REALLY nice, but it's a little more than I was hoping to pay.
 
I haven't seen the insides of Blakely or Laurel, sorry. I don't know anyone who lives in either, otherwise I'd ask.

FYI, the adcom meets on Thursdays. If your interview goes like mine you'll have it early in the morning (8:30 for me) and then the adcom meets a few hours later. That is good for you because you will be fresh on their minds. You'll do fine!:hardy:

Good to know. Yup, Kathy Craig said my interview would be at 8:30. If they meet on Thursdays (the same day I interview) then how long before I hear back???

Has anyone been in contact with UW recently?

Do you know how close they are to filling their class?

Also any info on the kinds of #'s they are looking at for a cutoff with regards to grades/scores?

yes, I agree with legallyblond. But Fremont is a very expensive district to live in. That's what happens when the district is so cool 😀 Also look possibly in Ballard, it's pretty far away though, but definately more affordable than Fremont or Queen Anne. I think you should be able to find something in the U-District, or at least Ravenna (north of U-district). There are always availabilities. And try http://www.thedaily.washington.edu if you want to access the Daily online. http://www.nwsource.com is a good Seattle site too if you want more listings.

I'm also facing the big housing decision. Over my undergrad career, I spent time in the dorms, the campus-owned apts. (Steven's Court), and an off-campus apartment in the U-District before moving home again to Federal Way and commuting. You might say I've rounded the basepaths on housing.
Anyway, I figure it would probably be a good idea to live near campus in case I need to be around the school in the evening (the bus I currently use ends at 6:00pm).

Would it be crazy to commute by bus on a daily basis (~40 mins. each way), or does this existing commute and timeframe seem like a feasible option? Just hoping to get your two cents...

legallyblond since you seem to know some UW dental students, are you aware if classes often require much time in the evening hours, like for labs or other activities?

If anyone else can answer this, please let me know.

Boboli--Hey, what part of Federal Way do you live in? I lived there up until 6th grade. I went to Brigadoon Elementary School. Also, how was Steven's Court? And do you know what the other UW apartments are like (Blakeley and Laurel Village)???

As for Steven's Court, I think it's hands-down the best dollar value for housing in the U-District. I don't think it's a married-couple facility, though. I was in a 6-person apartment, and it felt like the place was always bustling with activity. Grad students, I read somewhere, have priority on 4-bedroom apartments in the SC complex. I'm strongly considering this option if I find like-minded roommates.
Go to the HFS website from the www.washington.edu page, and you can find out about all the on-campus housing.

We moved to Kent. It's a little closer to my dad's dental practice in Auburn.

I've checked out the UW housing website before but it's hard to tell how nice the apartments are based on the one picture they have. The prices and location are definitely great though! I'm flying out for my interview tomorrow night (I'm living in Utah right now) so I'll definitely check out housing while I'm there.
 
wow, I didn't know there were so many UWers here. I'm currently in my second year in the dungeon known as Mercer Hall, but a group of us (about 6) are planning on moving to a house over the summer and next year. So far, the rents we've found are a better deal than Steven's Court. If you're in a big group, that might be the way to go.
 
I've been looking for places to move to but it seems anything in reason might be too far away from campus. I've never lived in the seattle area so it's hard to tell what the commute time would be for places like, burien, renton, bellevue, shoreline, and bothell. maybe you guys from around there could give me some idea.
 
I am from Seattle, lived in Seattle for more than 10 years. I am
attending UOP even though I was admitted to UW. As far as
living in Seattle, stay close to UW. Traffic is real bad, as a matter
of fact, it one of the worst in USA. Living near by UW, you can
utilize your precious time for many beneficial and enjoyable things
rather than spending it in commute. Just my two cents worth!

Are you driving or using the bus? I wouldn't bother commuting by car, as vishal said. By bus (where you can use the time to study or sleep), those surrounding areas will probably be ~20-30 mins, tops.
 
Well, I had my interview with UW yesterday. It went pretty well, better than expected. It was very laid back and easy going. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice. I was very impressed with everything. Anyone know when or how I can expect to hear from them? I know the Adcom meets on Thursdays, but other than that I don't know how things work.

Thats gr8 to hear that u had a good time and interview at UW.
I think within couple days after they meet, you should hear something. I will say Monday or Tuesday but don't be surprised if it is earlier than that. All the best friend...I am sure u r in.

Wow, you think I will hear back that fast? Did anyone else hear back within a couple days? That sounds a little fast to me, but that would be great!!! I hope I get in.
 
I interviewed on thursday, when i got home friday i found a message on my anwsering machine saying that i was accepted.

Did you get to check out the apartments when you were there for the interview? What did you think? We are still debating on buying a townehome or house, or trying to downsize into married housing. Not sure what to do yet. I hate the idea of a commute but also don't want my wife and kids holed up in an itsy-bitsy apartment for four years......
 
I didn't end up checking out the student housing. It turns out that if I get accepted to UW my cousin will have an apartment management job lined up for me and my wife. He is going to law school at UW and is graduating in June. He lives not too far from UW, so that's what I would do if I went. Free rent!!!
 
Hey all you UW acceptees. If you wouldn't mind, could you post your scores and gpa's. Just curious. I have my interview on monday and I guess I'm just starting to get real anxious.

Dak--Hey I thought my interview on Feb. 12th went great, although I still haven't heard back yet, so I'm getting a little worried. For some reason I thought this interview was going to be more stressful/different than the others I've had, but it wasn't at all. It was just like any other interview I've had--very friendly and laid back. I'm sure you'll do great! Good luck and let us know how it goes. When is your interview by the way?

i had the interview today and i think it went well. the interviewers were both very nice!

but i dont know how much that means now

b/c i think this was the last interview date and the adcom also met today

I just found out I'm on the alternate list 😕

Kathy Craig said "We haven't completed that
process, but when we do in a couple of weeks we will rank those on the list."

She couldn't give me any more info. than that. Anyone know how many are put on the alternate list? Or how many come off the list?
