Hey guys,

I was jw for those of you doing the UW 2ndary app, how are you structuring your personal statement? There are tons of examples of diversity... So do we write a short paragraph for each? Or do we choose some of them and develop them in an essay format?

I'm doing my UW secondary app right now and I guess the way I interpreted it was to write a double spaced page which sort of integrates the majority of the listed values into one cohesive story (although there are a lot of values listed on there). I haven't called anyone and don't know for sure, but that is what I thought the intructions were asking.

On a seperate note (and I dont mean to hijack this thread by any means but it just reminds me) are you applying to the RIDE program? Is there an advantage to applying which will yield a higher chance at acceptance compared to the regular UWSOD? I did a search but none that specifically applied to that particular question.

No, there is no advantage to applying to that program. It even says that in the secondary.

No, applying for the RIDE program will NOT increase your chance of getting in. You first need to get into UW SOD before they consider you for RIDE. Therefore, only do RIDE if you want to do the program.

To answer the OP question, I selected some listed criteria that were important to me and develop them into an essay.

I think for the diversity part, we can go over 1 page double spaced. The 1 page double space limitation is for the "why UW" prompt specifically.

As for the RIDE question, I'm not doing it and I don't believe it will affect your application. It states that RIDE is considered post-acceptance.

It doesn't say anywhere on there that we have to limit question/prompt 1.) to 1 page so sleepy is right. I went two full pages on it. But yes 1 page double on question 2.)

I do know that it says applying for RIDE will NOT help your chances but here are my thoughts on that:

According to the 2010 ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools there are only 246 in state applicants and 56 in staters are accepted. Of those 56, 10 or so are enrolled in the RIDE program.

UW says that they pick their top people and then place people in the RIDE program after the fact, but I have a hard time believing that of the top 56 people, 10 of them will have selected RIDE.

This means that the would have to remove the bottom few applicants and replace them with people who wanted to do the RIDE program.

Long story short, I know that they say that selecting ride won't help you but I can't help but feel like it might.
