I haven't seen this thread for this year so I thought I would start it. I figured it would be nice to share all of our movement together and monitor when people are being pulled off the list. I am #7 on the list. I read in another thread earlier today that apparently they had already pulled 1 off the list. Hopefully, this is true. I guess it might be too early to already be harassing the admissions office.😎

I was also wondering if any other OOS people were put on the list????

Thanks for starting this thread. Can't wait to see people getting accepted...

I'm #12! I'm also pathetic and antsy, which is evident by the fact that I already looked up past threads to find that it took until May 10th last year to get to #12. Can't wait to see some movement!

Great idea for a thread! I'm #10 on the list (but as I mentioned yesterday, when I called I was told that someone had already dropped and that now I was #9). There aren't that many of us on SDN. I think that we should keep each other updated on new info. If anyone calls the office to get an update on their position, can that person post their original rank # and then their new rank # on this thread so that the rest of us can see where we are relatively? I think that I am going to call again tomorrow.

And dreambig, you are really resourceful! How did you search through old threads to find out when the #12 last year was accepted? (do you remember when the #10 was accepted:laugh: ?)

Here ya go RisingSun:

It appears that no one posted when they got to #10, but somewhere between May 1 and May 10!

That is going to come up on us sooner than we think! I only ever see your name in the UW-related threads, and it exemplifies how I feel about UW - I felt like I had no chance there, and now my dream has come true (sorry for the cornyness).

I am going to invest in a very fine bottle of Syrah to open when I find out officially!

Yea, I'm definitely (by far) the most emotionally invested in UW. It is my dream school, and I think I'm still in shock about the fact that I'm THIS CLOSE to being in. I'm corny, too, but oh well! I followed alot of other threads, but never did much posting. The UW thread was always supportive (with quite a bit less of the general pre-med whining and bashing each other), which is why I've hung around this one the most.

Such an exciting time!

Anyone want to post some info about themselves--or chat on AIM sometime? I'm curious to know who you guys are.

May I post here? To start, who is a guy and who is a girl? I know about some of you, but I'll let you reveal yourselves if you want to. I'm a guy. Also, who is married or significantly paired up, and who has kids? I'm totally solo on all accounts. Oh, and where will you be coming from? I'm already in Seattle.

I'll throw my info out there. First of all, I'm a girl last I checked. 🙂 I have a significant other that I've been with for 3.5 years, who is a business finance type guy working for a consulting firm here in Seattle. No kiddos, and probably not in the real near future (but someday!). And I'm a UW undergrad, so here in Seattle already, also. Oh, and I'm 21-years-old. Not that you asked, but I'm curious about people's ages!

I'll bite. 29 years old, male, married w/2 kiddos, what else....addicted to Monster energy drinks, love wine and fine eating, (semi)-avid cyclist, bilingual, not very coordinated (no surgery in my future😀 ). Ready to get on with medical school already.

Haha, yea, I'm a youngin'. I can't imagine there will be TOO many M1's younger than me next year, since I will barely be 22 by the time fall rolls around.

Hey RisingSun,
Does your spouse work? And how old are your kiddos? I ask alot of questions, but I'm curious about the dynamics of my potential med school class. AND I'm at work doing data entry and am boooored.

Hey, same here, more or less. Are you trying to copy me?

Wife is not working now, but is thinking about it. Kids are 3 and 1. I hope our class has fun-loving people who like to cook, because I love to eat. I actually put that as one of my hobbies on my AMCAS (I think, or maybe it was an essay to a school or something, can't remember)!

Aww, little ones. And I am definitely not someone who likes to cook, but I sure do like to eat! Thats too funny you listed that as a hobby 🙂

Actually, I like to eat good food too, RS. I'm a little nervous about fine food (because I see $$$), but I definitely love good food.

My wife is a fantastic cook. Do you like Japanese?

UPDATE: Admissions now says that two people have been taken off of the list, so I am now #8, dreambig is #10 where I used to be, FizbanZymogen (where is he!!! He needs to join us on this thread!) is now #😀 , and angeljj is #5! I was told to expect LOTS of movement at the end of April and the beginning of May.

Now that I think about it, I didn't list eating as a hobby on my AMCAS, but when my interviewers at UW asked me things I like to do for fun I said, "My boyfriend and I like to find new, fun places to eat". Afterwards I was thinking, did I seriously say that?! But it was honest, since we DO like to go exploring and looking for hole-in-the-wall places to eat. After I said that my interviewer asked me to recommend a place to her, and I was really thankful I had just been to a place I really liked the night before! (Peso's near Queen Anne for the record, mmm)

Movin on up, movin on up .... to the east side .....

Wow, moving already! Exciting, eh?

Yayyyyy!!! Exciting. I didn't think that things would move this quickly.

Let's add another topic. Do you have any notion of what sort of practice you'll pursue? Tentative or firm, broad and general or narrow and specific, let's hear it.

I'm leaning strongly towards primary care in a community clinic (like Country Doctor, 45th St. Clinic, Seamar, etc.), thinking hard about a dual residency in IM/Peds. EM also has its appeal, however.

I wonder how many times I can post in a row before someone else tries to say something. 😀

Is that The Jeffersons?

Without a doubt, one of the funniest TV shows ever. That and Sanford and Son.

I'm looking toward IM or FM. Maybe OB/GYN (my two children's births have been the most amazing events in my life - would love to be a part of that in other peoples' lives). We'll see. I might love path, who knows.

Pretty much same here. Copy cats around here! 🙂 I'm ultimately most interested in OBGYN right now (I'm currently working/volunteering as a birth doula and I love it), but also have strong interest in family med and pediatrics.

And the part about your childrens' births being the most amazing experience of your life, ahhhh the miracle of life. It sounds SO corny, but I know what you're saying. The first birth I saw (not even someone I knew), I could barely keep myself from tearing up. When I saw the birth of my good friend's baby, I all out lost it and cried. I've seen many since then, and they are all amazing, you see something special and different each time.

Oh, and if I do family med I would ideally like to be in a rural area (I'm from central WA and like the small town thing), but I'm not sure how that would work out with my significant other being in the "business world" and all.

Yeah, babies are grand. That's the one drawback I see to an IM/Peds residency: much less time (if any) doing OB than FP gives you. I wonder if there's a way around that, a way of beefing up that deficiency without doing an additional year-long fellowship, because I'd like to do my own OBG stuff with my patients.

I think the reality of medical practice at this time severely limits how much OB stuff someone in FM does (I know, you have to do it in residency, but that is about it). If you can't do C-sections, then I don't think that hospitals will be willing to have you delivery babies there. I am sure that you could do GYN stuff, but I don't know how interesting that would be without the surgical element (an OB/GYN that I have shadowed said that the all the other OB/GYNs that she knows got hooked on the specialty because of the surgical aspects of it).

I'm willing to keep an open mind regarding specialty, though. I think that I want to practice in a field with fast, concrete results, rather than vague or drawn out illness states.

It really depends on where you practice, I think. Some rural areas have a really hard time getting OBGYN's, and alot of family practice docs deliver babies. In a city like Seattle, I think its really rare to see them doing that.

Now I'm curious about this though, because there are plenty of midwives with hospital privileges at UW (and they definitely don't do c-sections). So I'm not sure why a family practice doc couldn't deliver babies there. The problem usually lies in malpractice expenses, I would assume.

I guess you are right that an FM doc probably wouldn't need C-section abilities to deliver, but given that if something happened that required a C-section (I guess this happens more than you think, although you are probably much better informed than I) an FM doc would need an OB/GYN to come in. Midwives have to have this sort of backup, right? All the midwives that I know are associated with an OB/GYN practice, and take call their turn on call just like all the doctors. If an FM doc was doing all the deliveries in a rural community, including C-sections, he/she would have to be appropriately covered by insurance, and I think that the premiums are so high that it just would not make sense financially to do this, unless that doc was basically only doing OB.

The idea of being a rural FM doc and doing it all sounds awesome, though. I just don't have any experience talking with doctors in that kind of practice.

Have you guys actually gotten your waitlist letter in the mail? Is there anything we are supposed to DO? I know Brooke said something on the phone about emailing to tell them I want to stay on the waitlist, but I was excited and now I'm not sure what she was saying. Anyone want to clue me in?

Most of our doctors at the community clinic where I work in Seattle deliver babies and have hospital privileges to do so. Our FPs who don't do OB are paid less, in fact, than those who do. When we hire, we prefer doctors who will do OB.

Yea, the midwives at UW are generally within an OBGYN practice and have to have OBGYNs on call in order to do a c-section when it comes up. Which at UW is quite often (c-sections), because they tend to do alot of high risk OB. Which is interesting if you want to see multiples, preterm births, and alot of pathology. Other hospitals such as Group Health here in Seattle do more low risk births and have a much lower c-section rate. But, I'm rambling...

I agree that being able to "do it all", FP and OB in a rural area would be awesome--right up my alley. But the cost of it seems to be such a big problem!

Does anyone know if UW has a 2nd look weekend or something like that? I'd like to go if there is one (not that it will change my mind).

I was also told today that once we are accepted we will be given a financial aid packet, as long as we have already submitted our FAFSA. Does anyone know how UW does this? At one of the schools that I have been accepted, the students have to choose a lender, write promissory notes, etc. Who will be our lender at UW? I hope that fin aid does all that for us. It was a real pain filling out all the forms, choosing lenders, etc.

I second that, I really hope UW does that (choosing lenders, etc), or else I'm getting my finance-smart boyfriend to look it all over for me. I would have no clue! And I was wondering about a second-look thing also, but I heard that they (possibly?) are having one mid April. But I won't be accepted at that point...sooo...I am not sure.

Well, I haven't received my financial aid packet yet, nor have I received any information about a second-look weekend. I just sent in my form accepting their offer yesterday, however. The financial aid packet may only come once they process that.

Wow, you guys have been quite chatty today. It is good to hear that the list has moved up two spots. I can't believe it's moving this fast. It seems like it is faster than previous years.

Oh...I am also 23, single, with no kids. I grew up in New Mexico but came to Seattle University for undergrad in 2001 and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Theology and Religious Studies (and I was premed, of course). Since graduation I have just been working for a pulmonary research lab at Harborview. I am also interested in the MD/MPH program as well as the hispanic and international health pathways. As of now, I am also looking at going into Family Medicine and hopefully be able to work at some sort of inner-city clinic since I have an interest with working with queer and latino populations. I would also like to do clinical researh on these two communities domestically and abroad.

Anywho...It was nice getting to know some of you a little bit more today. 😎

Wow, I am jealous. I am in the hold pool at OHSU...I wish that I had as much information as you guys. I have three acceptances but I am waiting to hear from my state school, OHSU. Apparently, I might be waiting until June just to have some idea as to where I stand on the list. So the W of Dub gives you alot more information earlier. You are fortunate.

Looks like I need to get in on this. I am 27, married with two little boys (one is 3 and the other is 1). Risingsun, I love Japanese (took a year of language at College) and make gyoza regularly. I need to call to find out where I am on the list now. I could be officially accepted any day now.

Also I love mountain biking, but spend as much time as I can golfing. I sure hope we have some golfers in this class. I also am pretty proficient with the guitar and would love to rock out some time if others can/will play.

peace

I'm getting more excited about our class the more I read. Lots of cyclists, it sounds like, and variously interesting people with interesting hobbies and activities. Fun. Will you all be my best friends?

Hey everybody! I thought I would jump in here... I'm a little higher on the ranked list (20s) compared to you all, but on the list nonetheless 🙂

I'm 23 and in Southern California working in a research lab where I worked as an undergraduate, but I'm originally from Seattle and excited about an opportunity to return. EM is by far my strongest interest, especially in an inner-city environment. I have quite a few other interests, so I'm keeping a very open mind.

Love to be outdoors, whether it's fishing, hiking, running, skiing/snowboarding, etc. Hey FizbanZymogen, good to hear that you're a golfer. I didn't get to play much during college, but I've been able to sneak a few more rounds during my year off. Would love to keep it up during medical school!

Also, I wanted to say that I second .dream.big. on the overall quality of the UWSOM threads. As I read them (and it's apparent I've been doing more reading than posting) I get the same sense of a more supportive and friendly group. Hopefully the list will keep on moving and I will get the chance to spend time with such a great bunch.

All of you seem like such fun and interesting people. I am getting more excited about this by the second. 😀

Hey, Just wanted to let you guys know another spot will be opening up today or tomorrow. I'm a MT WWAMI, but a friend of mine that was accepted to UW as an OOSer is giving up her spot to go to the U of Chicago. I thought this might make someone very happy.

I think that UW is a direct lender for all the federal loans and I believe that we sign our promissory notes online via MYUW (at least that is how it was for undergrad).
