UWSOM Ranked Alternate List Movement 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We ate at the University Village place last week. Okay taste, I liked the olive oil/balsamic vinegar combo that came with the bread (it's a little different than how we usually make it; spicy but good), a little pricey.

I want to go where Italians go when they want pasta. Any suggestions?

La Spiga on Capitol Hill (12th and Pike, I believe) is the one I can vouch for on the part of Italians. All the Italians that I know put it in a category all its own. The owner is from Emilia-Romagna. They have a great wine list too. Volterra in Ballard has been suggested to me recently, and in the past as well, though by American appassionati rather than Italians themselves. The owner is a southern Italian (Sicilian, I believe, though don't quote me). La Fontana in Belltown has also been suggested to me recently, also by an American. I don't know much about it, but I've been curious to go myself. Another place that Americans who have been to Italy seem to like a lot is Perche' No? at the southern base of Queen Anne Hill. The owners are Asian (Korean, I believe, but maybe Chinese), which is unusual for an Italian restaurant. I was taken there once by a professor and her family, and it was very tasty. That was a while ago, and I was not yet able to judge the food for authenticity as I had yet to live in Italy; but even if it isn't super authentic, sometimes tasty is enough.

BTW, I'm thinking about living on the east side and biking the I-90 trail to Seattle, then going up Lake Washington to campus. Or living in Shoreline/Kenmore/Bothell and biking down the Burke-Gillman.

Between the two I would prefer the latter, personally. I like Shoreline better than anything on the east side, and I just don't like the idea of commuting across the lake, especially when it's cold, wet and/or windy. If you could live on the east side but up north, you could simply cycle around the top of the lake and head down the Burke-Gillman to the U. You might be in danger of pushing past your 10-mile limit, however. I imagine that you're considering the school districts involved as well, given your children. The east side is known for its schools. Tough call.

I really like Ciao Bella for Italian food. It is on 45th right across from Varlamos and Jak's (before you hit Children's).

The lasagna is amazing!

Thanks for the advice guys! I think that we'll be heading into town on Saturday to browse for houses, so we'll have to stop at one of those places. It's hard to find good restaurants that are family friendly - which is why we always end up going to Buca de Beppo in Lynnwood or someplace like that.

We need to get some more action on the class thread or get a few first years on here to talk about the school, etc. I've got so many questions about the curriculum, but I don't want to pester the SOM admissions office.

I've just thought of a place that I should have recommended to you for your trip into town this weekend (and which you'll have to try the next time you come around): Vios, on 19th Ave E, Capitol Hill. Cozy and inviting, homey but classy, wonderful Mediterranean food--the owner is Greek, but they are Mediterranean generalists--and they are the most family-friendly place you will ever find. There's a large, separate play area in the back of the restaurant for the kids when they tire of adult conversation at the table, and there have always been many children around when I've been there. They make it very clear that this is to be expected, enjoyed and celebrated. It's really good food too.

Was house-hunting productive?

Chulito,

Thanks for the advice! We actually didn't make it down over the weekend, and decided to go down today instead. We'll definitely be hitting up one of those restaurants.

House hunting is fun, but a bit early for a June move. Besides, I don't want to sign a lease somewhere then be WAMIed to WSU, or worse, not get in off the waitlist.

RisingSun,

Your going to get in trust me. Don't you only have 3 more slots to go?

I got accepted this morning and I was #7. The list is moving quick!

Angeljj, that's great news! Congrats! 😀

It's cool to watch the list work its way up one by one. I'll be on edge when #9 has been accepted and I'm next!

Anyone talk to the admissions office this week after monday when angeljj was accepted? I'm curious if the list has moved any since then. Basically I'm getting more and more anxious the closer we are to may!

Well everyone,

I will be writing UWSOM today to decline my acceptance. Financially UWSOM will not work for my family. Thanks to everyone on these boards for their support and enthusiasm. I wish you all the best of luck in your medical endevours and am glad my seat will help many of you very deserving guys and girls fulfill your dreams.

Good luck in the military, Fiz. Will you be back in Washington in the future, or is this goodbye to the northwest?

hey everybody I just got off the phone with Brooke and it looks like they have taken the first 9 people. Looks like RisingSun you are up next! Good Luck!

I would like to do my residency in Rads at either Madigan or Tripler (Hawaii). We'll see as that's neither here nor there. I love Washington but the cost of living here is becoming outrageous.

Fizban,

I was looking forward to meeting you and I'm sorry that we won't be classmates. But I know that you made the best choice for you and your family, and USUHS is a great school that will give you a great education. Best of luck with everything, and we'll be in touch.

Maybe you'll match at Madigan and end up doing rotations at UWMC and/or Harborview, and I'll run into you then.

RisingSun,

Its people like you that made this choice so difficult. We'll keep in touch and I would love to rotate somewhere with you When third and fourth year roll around we'll have to line something up at Harborview or somewhere similar. Thanks for your support and friendship throughout this process.

By the way, have you heard anything from Baylor yet?

No, I was told that even if I was pulled off their waitlist it wouldn't be until late may or early June. Their year starts in July, so for me that just wouldn't be enough time. I loved the school, though - I think that they are doing everything right - block schedule, shortened preclinical years, 2+ months to study for Step 1, rotations at probably one of the top medical centers (Texas Medical Center) in the world, great facilities and administration that take student requests seriously, and really bright students.

When will you be moving out to MD?

Best of Luck Fizban, it sounds like the USUHS will be getting a great future dr. in you.

Up to #9 already thats great, the list is moving fast!!! Hopefully we all hear soon. You'll have to let us know RisingSun when you hear the news. Does anyone know if that includes Fiz's spot or not?

I think once they get my letter RisingSun will be in. It will take a day for them to get my letter.

You guys know that I'll be posting on this thread the moment that I find out. 😀

Just out of curiosity, can those on the ranked list (and unranked, too) that haven't been accepted yet please post their original spot on the list? I'm curious as to where everyone still on this thread is ranked.

RisingSun, I was #12. So I'm assuming I'm around #3 now...not too much longer! I'm curious where everyone else on this board stands, also.

originially I was in the 23 slot. Almost half way there!

Guys, I just got the nod from UW today! I was #10 on the list, so that have at least made it that far.

Big congrats, homey. Now you can start house-hunting in earnest. When was it that we find out about the draft?

Congrats RisingSun!!!! good luck in the draft, hope you get where you want.

by the way, I started out in the low 20's on the list. Right at half way there now!

Thanks guys! I still can't believe that I'm starting school at UW in a few months.

The lottery is May 18 :scared: I can only hope that I'm not WAMIed to Pullman, even though it probably would be a good experience there. The logistics of moving there and back again in the course of a year are frightening.

Future, you're almost there! 10 felt like a lot of spots but it actually went pretty quick. With May 15 approaching fast, I'm sure that the number of dropped spots will increase quickly.

Congrats, congrats! I know what you mean about kinda being in disbelief that you'll be attending UW med school in a few months. With only 2 more spots left, I'm getting that same feeling. Anyways, again, congrats.

congratulations RisingSun! You know, it would seem kinda silly if there wasn't a way for more established individuals like yourself to get out of the lottery. I can't imagine they would expect families to get up and move for just a year.

Apparently those with families or other strong reasons to stay in Seattle and petition to remain in Seattle if they are drafted to go to Pullman. Hopefully it won't come to that.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear good news from UW. There should be a lot of movement these next two weeks.

I just withdrew from all the other schools that I have been accepted. It feels awesome to finally know where I'll be the next four years.

G'luck to all! dreambig, your number should be coming up real soon.

As a long-time reader of this thread, I congratulates people who got into UWSOM.
I was #11 on the waiting list and got my acceptance this morning. However, I'm dropping my acceptance next week so another person might have their dream come true at a reputable medical school like the UW. I think it was a miracle from God that I actually got accepted at the UW! But too bad, I can not attend 2 medschools at the same time. Goodluck everyone!
Oh, remember this formula when you get into medschool😛= MD.

Where did you decide to go Warbeakworm?
Congrats on the UW by the way.

That must be a nice feeling RisingSun, congrats again!!!!

I'm actually going to Loma Linda University (a private religious university in Loma Linda, 2hr east from LA). It has been a very hard decision to make. UW is very nice and cheap and I love Seattle (been here for 6 years) and my family is closed by. However, Loma Linda is very nice too, much more expensive though. The key factor is my boyfriend; he's second year medschool student at LLU. There's a strong potential that we might get married. Love should be the most important factor, right? At least for me, it is.

Warbeakworm,

Congrats on getting into LLU and UW. I don't know anything about LLU, but no school is better than the one a SO is at, no? Good luck with your studies there.

And you just made dreambig's day!

Congrats in advance, .dream.big.! We knew you'd make it.

Good luck to you at LLU, Warbeakworm. How wonderful to have your husband there with you.

RisingSun, what is SO? and where else did you get into?
My friend told me to frame my acceptance letter from UW even if I don't go there; I'm thinking about it, 🙂.
Just out of curiosity, do you guy actually know where my name Warbeakworm comes from?

SO = significant other.

I was wondering where you had found that name. What does it mean? It sounds like the name of a character from Watership Down.

I have no idea. Do tell.

I got into a few midwestern state schools in addition to UW.

No acceptance yet! But, you can bet I'm going to be stalking my email all day. And by the way, thanks you guys. You've all been so supportive, I appreciate it!

Oh, thanks Chulito for your explanation.
Warbeak is a name of a charater (a sparrow queen and warrior) in the Redwall series by Brian Jacques in which sparrows call other creature walking on earth "worm." I'm a Redwall addict and sometimes I wonder how I could have done all the experiments with rats (no problem, they're the villains in Redwall) and mice (the heroes and nice creatures). 😀

Suuuuure, waitlist movement slows to a halt right as I am next to get an acceptance. Haha, a cruel joke. Still waiting on an acceptance email, to all of you wondering about waitlist movement!

Good luck dream.big.

It's only a matter of time

I'd like to think it is the calm before the big withdrawl storm.

Good luck

Any day now, dreambig!

Have any of you guys started looking for houses yet? In what areas are you looking?

Well...I live in the Pinehurst/Northgate-ish area of Seattle right now. And I've been randomly browsing craigslist looking for places. But, I don't want to fall in love with anything and then find out I am being sent to Pullman, you know? The area I am in now is about a 15 minute bus ride (straight shot) to UW, and I actually enjoy the downtime in the morning on my way to school. Its also WAY less expensive than living closer to the U-district, Greenlake, Wallingford, etc. My ideal would be to find a really great, affordable MIL apartment in Montlake, but thats highly unlikely I suppose.

What's an MIL apartment?

What's an MIL apartment?

Mother-in-law. Technically an Accessory Dwelling Unit which allows a house owner to legally rent out space. Typically a basement apartment, studio or 1 bedroom, with shared access to laundry facilities, hopefully with ceilings at least 6 ft, and not below competitive cloggers. One of the cheapest ways to live alone - you can get these below $700 with some luck.

There are tons of MILs north of the U, and you can actually get away from street noise if the unit is in the back of the property. Note that the wide swath of land north of UW, south of Ravenna Park, has seen an armed robbery about once a week lately. Plus if you need silence to sleep, avoid 17th Ave NE, which is fraternity row, and actually I recommend avoiding that entire just-north-of-UW swath (from which I'm about to flee, myself).

As a 15 year Seattle resident I highly, highly recommend Craigslist for finding a place to live. On rare occasion there's a listing in the (online) newspaper classifieds that's (a) worth looking at and (b) not also on Craigslist. Why is Craigslist good? Because almost everything available is there, you get to have a telling email exchange with the landlord before you waste time researching what turns out to be a hole, and most of the time there are pictures and a specific location posted.

PM me for further info if desired. I have strong, long-held opinions about the neighborhoods here.

dreambig, I check this thread everyday hoping that you'll have posted about your acceptance. With less than a week for the final withdrawl deadline I am sure that there will be a lot of movement soon. Didn't WBW say she was going to be sending in her withdrawl letter this week? Hopefully you'll get some good news soon.

G'luck to everyone still waiting!
