We ate at the University Village place last week. Okay taste, I liked the olive oil/balsamic vinegar combo that came with the bread (it's a little different than how we usually make it; spicy but good), a little pricey.
I want to go where Italians go when they want pasta. Any suggestions?
La Spiga on Capitol Hill (12th and Pike, I believe) is the one I can vouch for on the part of Italians. All the Italians that I know put it in a category all its own. The owner is from Emilia-Romagna. They have a great wine list too. Volterra in Ballard has been suggested to me recently, and in the past as well, though by American appassionati rather than Italians themselves. The owner is a southern Italian (Sicilian, I believe, though don't quote me). La Fontana in Belltown has also been suggested to me recently, also by an American. I don't know much about it, but I've been curious to go myself. Another place that Americans who have been to Italy seem to like a lot is Perche' No? at the southern base of Queen Anne Hill. The owners are Asian (Korean, I believe, but maybe Chinese), which is unusual for an Italian restaurant. I was taken there once by a professor and her family, and it was very tasty. That was a while ago, and I was not yet able to judge the food for authenticity as I had yet to live in Italy; but even if it isn't super authentic, sometimes tasty is enough.
BTW, I'm thinking about living on the east side and biking the I-90 trail to Seattle, then going up Lake Washington to campus. Or living in Shoreline/Kenmore/Bothell and biking down the Burke-Gillman.
Between the two I would prefer the latter, personally. I like Shoreline better than anything on the east side, and I just don't like the idea of commuting across the lake, especially when it's cold, wet and/or windy. If you could live on the east side but up north, you could simply cycle around the top of the lake and head down the Burke-Gillman to the U. You might be in danger of pushing past your 10-mile limit, however. I imagine that you're considering the school districts involved as well, given your children. The east side is known for its schools. Tough call.
