Hi!
I am currently a first year at an osteopathic medical school, I applied for VA HPSP, back in May they said application package accepted and that a final decision usually took 30 days, its been 119 days and I have heard nothing. Has anyone had any previous experience with something similar with VA HPSP? Anything I can do?
Thanks in advance!

Hey I have no info for you but just wanted to say that I'm in the same position; applied in May and haven't heard anything since. Please let me know if your status changes.

Thought I'd chime in here. I was awarded the scholarship on October 28. Applied at the end of March of this year, so it was about a 7 month wait. I honestly thought I was ghosted lol. I've heard from many people that they're been particularly slow with reviewing applications this year. My mentor who works at the VA says election years usually screw everything up and they move even slower than usual.

It took 7 months and two weeks for me as well. I was awarded 11/12. Congrats!

Were u applying for fall or spring?
If it was for fall did u end up just taking a loan for this semester? And would they refund you the money?
Thanks!
I had applied for fall and they pushed me to Spring. I did take a loan for this semester. The award is NOT retroactive.

I know OP posted this earlier this year, but I'm gonna put this here anyway for future applicants. I'm glad that VA HPSP is gaining popularity. Service commitment is similar to its military counterpart which is 1:1.5. This translates to 4 years of medical school to 6 years of VA service. When this scholarship was initially offered, you can defer your service commitment until after fellowship training. (I don't know if that's still the case, check with your recruiter).
I want to clarify that military (Army/Navy/AF) payback is 1:1 so that is something to consider - the VA is taking more of your time for less money.

Hi I was also accepted. I completed all my final paperwork and my security screening came back fine . But I haven't heard anything else from them. How long did it take them to get back to you with the info on when they would start your scholarship and stipend ? My Spring semester loans get released soon and I want to avoid that so I'm kinda going crazy waiting lol.

Does anyone know if VA HPSP is more lenient that navy/army HPSP in terms of health reqs? I had depression 15 years ago and I’m def nervous about disclosure.

Hello everyone,

I’m seeking advice regarding my situation with the VA Health Professional Scholarship Program (HPSP). I was notified earlier this year that I had been selected as a recipient of the scholarship, and I completed all the required steps, including the background check, vendor authorization, and attendance at the Town Hall meeting. During the Town Hall, I was provided with onboarding instructions, which I carefully followed.

Recently, I received an email stating that my application or subsequent corrections were not submitted by a 9/30/2024 deadline and that further applications are not being reviewed at this time. However, upon reviewing the slides and materials shared during the Town Hall meeting, I found no mention of this specific deadline. I have since emailed the HPSP Applications team, explaining the situation and attaching the relevant documentation, including screenshots of the slides, to highlight this discrepancy.

I am currently awaiting their response, but time is of the essence as my medical school program begins on January 6, 2025, and I need clarity on my scholarship status. This situation has left me concerned, as I was diligent in completing all the required steps and following the process outlined during the onboarding.

I’m wondering if this could be an oversight on their part, given that the deadline wasn’t mentioned in the materials provided. If anyone has experienced a similar situation where they were informed of a deadline after the fact, I would be grateful to hear how it was resolved. I am also wondering what additional steps I can take to ensure my case is reconsidered and whether there are any resources, forums, or contacts that could help me escalate or clarify this matter.

Any insights or suggestions from those who have navigated the HPSP process or similar situations with the VA would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and help!

That sounds really stressful! I hope it works out.
Just curious, though, I thought the VA HPSP didn’t open until the new year (so maybe today?). Did you apply last January and it’s taken a whole year to go through the process? I was considering applying but my program starts in July so I’m not sure if it would be enough time…

It will take a while. Especially if you wait until the deadline to submit. I applied in March and got accepted in November.

Email back to whomever sent your acceptance letter. Also, here should be names and emails on those documents you submitted as well.

It seems like maybe someone pressed the wrong button? I mean, you are very far along in the process to not be accepted anymore.

Did anybody apply for Fall 2025/Winter 2026, the cycle with the submission period of 2/1/25 to 3/15/25? Do you know anybody who was awarded and what factors made them competitive? I barely applied in time because I got accepted the week of the deadline. Would my later submission significantly reduce my chances, or in a best case scenario, my scholarship would start Winter 2026?

I can only speak to the physician scholarship but even though they said it’s for winter you are probably not going to hear back until December or later. So definitely have a plan in place for tuition because it’s not retroactive

Hello! I was hoping someone could speak about the acceptance process please! I just received my tentative offer letter from the VA but when I had first applied, I used my undergraduate gpa since I had no graduate school gpa, but I have now completed my first year of medical school and was wondering if I needed to update my cumulative gpa to include this? Thank you so much for your help!
