What do you need to know?

I'm a VA resident and this is my second year applying. I am an alternate right now and really hoping for good news soon.

I was wondering how long the waiting list was for in-staters and do people still withdraw past the April 17th date?

There are three wait lists. One for Virginia residents with 15 people on it. One for Maryland residents with 15 people (I'm pretty sure this is right, any MD residents correct me if I'm wrong). And then one for out-of-state students - I don't know how many are on this list but I predict it is quite longer than 15 (generally out-of-state lists move much more than in-state).

The contact at Va-Md is vauge with any answers about how much the lists move each year and it is their policy not to tell you where you rank on the list although they have said explicitly that alternates are ranked. We were told (again this may only pertain to Va Residents) that they generally take 2-8 people off the list and they have had people withdraw as late as a week before classes start. I've heard through students that they have been known to take the entire list (this is from students and may not be reliable).

So in-state people who got accepted the first time around had until April 17 to send in a deposit. But if they are on a waiting list somewhere else and get in they can withdraw, but they'd just lose their deposit?

That's right! (I almost did it myself, although now I'm glad I didn't.)

So, for the in-state waitlist, is it ranked or is it re-evaluated depending on the candidate pool?

Ok, so basically I've been lurking around this site since last summer and have gotten fantastic information off of it...
So now I need advice 😕 I've been accepted at Western for this incoming class. I'm psyched and I really liked the curriculum. However, it's quite far from my home (I'm in MA), which freaks me out, and I have two elderly grandmothers here that I feel very obligated to take care of.

I'm on the out-of-state wait list for VA-MD and I 100% loved everything about it there... east coast, great vibe, etc... Now, I have been informed that the out of state wait-list has been filled by intital offers. Perfect, right? So, what should I do? Make arrangements for Western and see where that takes me, and give up on VA-MD? Has anyone heard about previous years of this happening in VMRCVM and people getting off the wait-list?

I'm just getting anxious, like a lot of other people here are... I want answers for my life!!!

Thanks 😳

From what I understand the list is ranked, however, they will not tell you where on the list you are.

How frustrating! It would be nice if they could tell you more information or anything helpful at all instead of just sit there and wait. Massblonde, that totally sucks, but at least you got in somewhere!

I would probably take the offer from Western if you have a definite offer. I'm a Vet student at VA Md. You may not hear anything from them until the day before classes start if you are on the wait list. . . that happened to a friend of mine. Or you may hear nothing.

VA-md has "tracking". . . many other schools don't. Are you familiar with tracking? You track "small animal" or "Equine" or "Food Animal" or Govt Corporate or "Mixed". If you want to do Govt/Corp, VA tech is good. Otherwise the "tracking" limits you to some degree in what you learn, in my opinion, and it doesnt prepare you as well for Boards (in the area that you don't track). If you like Power Point presentations, go to VA-Md. If you don't like Powerpoint presentations, go elsewhere.

If you have any type of Disability, I do not recommend Va-Md, but you did not hear that from me.

Aren't they supposed to call the alternates if all the spots have been filled?

My impression is that they will call you if a spot opens up and you are next on the list, otherwise, you won't hear anything.

Joyce Massie told me all the spots for the out of staters had been filled with initial offers, which means no one was getting of the waitlist. Which, well,... I'm on, and it stinks because I'd like to have an finite answer.

I've put my $ on Western and accepted their offer, but I am production animal/inspection so VA sort of fits for me.

Ugh... I just don't want to be called when I'm already in class at Western. that would be the pits.

I wish they would be more forthcoming with their information, ya no. I know they ccan't give exact numbers but telling you where you are on the list would be a huge help or how many poeple have already come off the list.

I had my "non-admit" application review this morning with Joyce Massie.

During the conversation she said that they have received deposits for all of the 50 Virginia spots. But, she still tried to emphasize that movement is still likely to happen through the summer. I think that she was trying to say that chances are at least one of those 50 people will withdraw after paying a deposit - but of course, nothing is said explictly. Nonetheless, after this news I'm going to try and put the thought of me getting in to school for this fall out of my head - If it happens, great, if not, I won't be disappointed... again.

Did she say how many students had already been accepted off the waitlist or anything like that?

The only thing she said (and this was before my app review) was they had used a "few people" off the list. I guess this means, quack, that you and I are somewhere between 4 and 15 on "the list."

I don't understand what the harm would be in rtelling students where they are on the list, that way they could have realistic expeciations about getting in and other plans.
