Hello everyone. While there is a great deal on the internet and job boards about salaries, retirement benefits, etc. for newly hired and partner rad oncs, there's not much about vacation time.

What's a typical or average number of weeks of vacation that a just-out-residency rad onc doc can expect? I've heard everything from 3 to 12, so I'm looking more for an average than the outliers. How does this average look for a partner in a group?

How does this compare to the average for diagnostic rads?

We recently had a talk about the job hunt, salaries, benefits, etc. in our residency program and this question was left unanswered.

Attendings and 4th-5th year residents, please share your knowledge.

Thanks.

It depends upon where you are etc. Academic is typically 4 weeks but dont include going to conferences (thus you can be out quite a lot). Private practice typically starts our 3-4 weeks and goes up to 6, but this includes conferences. Both tend to give more weeks with increasing seniority. Same as most out pt fields.

Why compre it to dx rads particularly?

Thanks for the post stephew.

Why compare to diagnostic rads? I have a number of friends looking for jobs in that field and they seem to be coming across many jobs with very generous vacation time (~10 weeks for a lot of them). Just curious as to whether newly minted rad oncs (or veterans for that matter) could expect anything in that ballpark.

Thanks.

people seem to compare radiology and radiation oncology all the time. the fields could not be more different...the whole idea of treating patients is very much foreign to rads (exception of interventional, and they dont have any patient follow-up). the true is same for vacations. most radoncs have 4-8 weeks vacation (there are always exceptions...im just giving the mean +/- 2 SD)
