I just got my vacation scheduling form for residency. Any tips on how to spread out the vacation time (2 X 2 blocks)? Do most people try for holidays and end of year in your programs? I don't have anything fixed in my year, and SO is self-employed so flexible.... any tips? Thanks!

Definitnely your PGY1 year take some time off during the holidays. That's when most people get the intern blues, for manyr easons:
1, its holidays and you're working. blows.
2, the new energy of being the new doctor has worn off. blows.
3, the new energy of a new job has worn off. blows.
4, you don't think you're learning anything and think all the other residents are way smarter than you. (its just because they've done CCU and know cardiology answers, and you haen't and don't). blows.

so take dec or jan off. then take one off again in teh spring. you should have enough energy from graduating med school and such to last you atleast 4-5 months so i don't think you need to take time off during that. my two cents.

we get "winter break", which is one week, in addition to the 2x2 blocks....would u recommend taking 3 weeks total or taking 2 weeks in the first 6 mo, then winter break, then the last 2 weeks during last 6 months. Or how would u do it?

I would reiterate what Quinn said. You will have enough energy as a new doctor to last you through at least 6 months (give or take).

You're gonna find you really need vacation right around March/April as this is when the Intern Blues set in hard and fast. After a vacation in that time frame you can pretty much last the rest of the year.

So Holidays, Spring and whenever you feel the other would serve you best.
