Vacation Time Post-Residency

Hey guys, question for the attendings out there or for the graduating seniors who've been interviewing for their first post-residency job:

Do you have an official paid vacation time?

At my job, the answer is no. I can have as many days off as I'd like so long as I average full time status for the year (which is 10 shifts/month at my job). The plus side is I can have up to 20-21 days off/month. The downside, obviously, is if I'm not working, I'm not producing any income.

Does anyone have jobs where you have X number of days off designated as vacation? If so, do you get paid a flat rate for that day?

My job works in a similar way. I get paid a salary to work a certain number of shifts. This works out to 12 sifts/month, but also factors in 4 weeks off/year. Of course, one can arrange his/her schedule to get many more weeks off if one is willing to have some heavier weeks/months.
 
It depends.

If you are an employee of the hospital, you may be offered several weeks/year as vacation time. This time would generally be paid time off.

If you are an IC or an employee of a EM group, you may be expected to work a minimum number of shifts per year/month as mentioned above. The rest of the time is yours. You won't necessarily be paid for the time you don't work, but you will have the flexibilty to schedule your shifts in such a way to allow you to take ample time off.

Where I am currently, no specific vacation time off, you basically jsut stack your shift.s They really shanghaid us into thinking we got 4-6 weeks off, but really, we don't.

Where I am going, FFS in Midwest, apparently we have "vacation" months which you have a decreased # of required shifts that month, but since its FFS your income will obviusly be down. But hte money they are mkaing there seems to toally make up for it, so its not supposedly that big a deal.

Paid vacation in ER? Thought this was impossible. A shift is a shift, and an hour is an hour. Your contract will usually have the certain amount you need to work. If they want to pretend to give you 2 months of vacation per year, then so be it, but you'll work everyday for the other 8 months. If they want to pretend to give you a little more and call it paid vacation, then so be it, but it still comes down to the whole package how much money per hour (the hours do not change).

There are other practice setups than FFS, you know. I would assume that most academic attendings get some sort of paid vacation (or maybe not, in some cases such as Quinn's). I know of at least 2 of the 4 EDs I've been exposed to that there is a shift reduction that goes along with "taking vacation" in any given month, so they don't have to stack their shifts in order to take vacation.
