Hey all, I'm a PGY-2 in radonc and am enjoying the beginning of my career. I did have a question for some senior residents or attendings. Ive been trying to take my first vacation week and it has been extremely difficult to coordinate and it seems like a pain for everyone around me to cover, and when i get back ill have some terrible weeks catching up. Is that a common situation to encounter? I have lots of family overseas (a mere 20 hour flight time + layovers), Including grandparents who arent getting any younger, that i would like to be able to visit for 2-3 weeks every couple of years. Ive pretty much ruled that out for residency but is it the same as an attending? Or do i just need to try harder to get that time off now? Thanks

It's much harder as a resident. Your vacation as an attending is highly dependent on your practice setting and the # Rad Oncs in your group. In PP, worst case scenario, you can hire a locums guy to babysit your OTVs while you are gone.

But honestly, it is rare to see junior attendings take > 2 weeks continuous vacation.

It sounds like you may be trying to tack on vacation time to upcoming holiday time off. No problem with that, except that it's usually customary for PGY2s (and 3s) to cover the major holidays, which may be the reason why others are hesitant to cover for you. As you advance in your residency, you earn the right to not carry the pager on Thanksgiving, Xmas, New Years, Independence Day, etc. That's how it is in our program.

You can always offer an extra incentive, like covering two weeks of someone else's call for this one week ... That usually works. 🙂
