This is just to be safe. What vaccination should medical students receive before entering med school? Are there certain diseases that students are more exposed to in med school?

^ That. Most people already have the vaccines required from childhood vaccinations and college requirements, you just need to provide the school with dates so make sure you have a copy of your immunization record. But the school will tell you everything you need to do, and you'll have plenty of time to do it.

Many of the vaccines that were once recommended for health care providers, such as Hepatitis B, are now recommended for administered in infancy and required for attendance in pre-school, primary school.
I've decided that there is some unwritten law out there, however, which somehow absolutely precludes the TB policies at any two institutions from overlapping in any compatible way. You will always be required to jump through 8 additional TB hoops even if you have all the documentation from doing so only 2-3mo previously elsewhere 🙄

And for those of us born outside of the United States and received a TB vaccine, there's always the chance for a false positive, which complicates things. 😛

Even if you've been administered all your vaccines, some schools require you to have titer levels drawn to make sure you are still vaccinated. It is actually relatively common to lose Hep B immunization.

Lol. Off topic, but that reminds me of my old boss, who tried to get me to go for the titer (I decided to decline, as scribing is a low-risk position for exposure) by telling me how she got hers drawn and found out that she had a *gasp* positive *gasp* result, so she ran out and got the vaccine series again.

:smack:

Just be careful not to get autism....

/slowly backs from thread....
Well, see, I heard that vaccines cause autism, so I went out and got myself an "autism vaccination" so I can't catch it. Then I realized that by GETTING the vaccination my risk went up again so now I don't know what to do! Pls hlp.

Just find a friend in your hospital's ID department with experience in cootie shots.

I had to get some titers done to verify immunity to a handful of things. Turned out I wasn't actually immune to measles or mumps. Had to get a couple of MMRs and a hep b series. The school sent me a big list of exactly what proofs and tests I needed to have done.

Well this explains a lot about your posts.

😉

Ditto here. My hospital required the titers even with proof of childhood immunization. Lo and behold, I had almost zero immunity to measles and rubella. Would not have been awesome to get rubella during any of my 3 pregnancies.

The "vaccines cause autism" movement, which is what was specifically being referenced, is so fundamentally flawed and yet so vehemently protested, that I find myself forced to treat it either as hilarious, or as the most depressing thing ever. I choose hilarious. It is completely separate from any normal discussion about vaccines and their pros and cons.

You'll get a big list of mandatory vaccines and prompts to provide documentation of these

Most of them were given before you ever learned to speak

The flu is every year

Unless you live in a place with no foreigners whatsoever (and there are plenty of such places) I don't see how local healthcare professionals wouldn't know about BCG vaccine and how it gives false positive TB test.

There is a jagoff in the allo forum right now complaining about having to get the flu vaccine and using this exact argument...

I've been on SDN for 10 years in various capacities, I regularly read multiple Kinja blogs, I enjoy Reddit and Fark, including politics tabs of both, and the allo board is the douchiest place of them all.

That's probably a tactic I should consider. I get too worked up to have polite conversations about the anti-vaccine movement...I've tried try to make the case that the people spreading absurd misinformation about vaccines ought to prosecuted for accessory to murder.
