Is there a trick to counting valence electrons for transition metals?

Great question.....I hate to be the bearer of bad news......the transition elements have a few unusual anomalies.....since the d orbitals come in at a higher energy value than s orbitals..... For example.....1s2s2p3s3p4s3d.......anomalies exist for elements such as Cu, Cr, Mo. Thus.....you must draw the electron configuration out. ......no fool-proof trick.

So would you count the d orbital electrons too for valence? I'm confused why you would have six valence electrons for chromium but 6 for iron for example

Cr is 1s22s22p63s23p64s13d5 thus the outermost shell is 4,,,,,hence one valence electron. Now lets do Fe....1s22s22p63s23p64s23d6... we have two valence electrons in the outermost shell.
