Wondering what you guys thought of Vanderbilt as a residency program. I interviewed there and I honestly loved it. The clinical diversity, the faculty mentorship, the emphasis on perioperative medicine specifically ERAS protocols and co-management services, informatics/genomics, quality improvement and systems reform. Intern year had a solid variety in experiences and even a month of "professional development." I felt like Vandy had all the parts to be considered a truly top tier program.

Were there any other highlights and or red flags anyone else noticed or were concerned about?

And for all you attendings out there, what's your opinion on Vandy's reputation overall?

I didn't train there but I trained with attendings from there, they were clinically excellent and talked highly of the program. The attendings I trained with said they have great exposure, good faculty. If you're interested in critical care I heard they have one of the best critical care programs, anesthesia closed unit where you make the decisions, one of the ICU attendings said it was a lot of work and responsibility but much better than being a consultant and worth the year, they were better than some fresh grads at bigger name programs. They've a big catchment area too...and always take everyone's advice with a grain of salt

Very good program. No red flags. I would add Vandy is still better known in the Southeast than perhaps the Midwest and West so factor that into your decision.

I hate when programs want separate personal statements tailored to why you really want to go there. I know it's their way of selecting for people that really do want to go there above all else but it comes off egotistical to me. I'm sorry, I'm not going to stroke your ego just to get an interview.

Unless someone has a genuine connection to our program (e.g, undergraduate, family, significant other, external rotation), we all roll our eyes when we see such things on personal statements. We assume they just copy and paste for every program they apply to.

How can they copy and paste if it's personalized...?

How competitive is Vandy anesthesia? It’s my dream program, but I only have 216 on Step 1. Will I automatically be screened out?

Yes, most likely. My program had a pretty firm cutoff of 225 and Vandy is a higher tier program. You can try an away rotation there if you want to and it might help you break in if you impress... but brand name academic programs will be tough with that score.

Sorry to be brutally honest, but I would concentrate my priorities on matching and overcoming the stigma of that Step 1 score before worrying about specific programs. This years cycle has been rough on people with lower scores.

The place where I did residency screened me out numerically. But the PD found my application interesting and so they interviewed me (and I matched there). So getting screened out isn't per se final.

Why don't you send their PD an email saying why you are interested in them and that you'd love a chance to interview there?
