Does anyone know how difficult/competitive it is to get into one of these programs? For those who have participated in the past, how did you like it?

I applied to the NIDKK program but have no heard back yet. I'm really hoping I get it though. For anyone who's done it, did you like it?

Anyone apply to the AATS summer scholarship? We should be hearing back in about 2 weeks.

Got into the NIDDK center in New York at Columbia! The overall acceptance rate they said was 12%. Not sure if the other centers are releasing information yet so good luck to those who are still waiting to hear back!

In your opinion what are the three least competitive centers?

Boston Area Diabetes Research Center

Columbia University, New York

Johns Hopkins/University of Maryland

Joslin Diabetes Center/Harvard University

University of Alabama, Birmingham

University of California, Los Angeles

University of California, San Diego

University of California, San Francisco

University of Chicago

University of Colorado, Denver

University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

University of Washington, Seattle

Vanderbilt University, Nashville

Washington University, St. Louis

Yale University, New Haven

Probably the programs away from the big cities (eg: Birmingham, Denver, Ann Arbor, etc) are the least competitive. That is my humble opinion -- holds true for residencies/jobs too I believe (provided all other factors equal).

Can anyone comment on their experiences from the NIDDK program? The program itself seems pretty open ended (almost like a glorified stipend) with not a lot of hand holding -- you have to end up finding your own mentor from a list, arrange for housing, etc.

Also have not heard back yet -- I understand it's site dependent so fingers crossed!

Accepted to UW Seattle for NIDDK! So psyched. Also interested in comments from people who have participated before 🙂

Is anyone still waiting to hear back from their NIDDK site? I applied to UPenn and haven't gotten any kind of email or phone call 🙁

^yep. I've been rejected from niddk but got into another program so it worked out. For your info, I believe I did pick Upenn as my 2nd site. Best of luck!

Does anyone know what exactly the end summer research symposium is? Do we present a poster? Or is it more of an oral presentation?

I did the program at the Boston Area Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center (MGH) in 2013 (I know it feels so long ago). They usually offer you a list of investigators and you can rank who you want to work with. As far as housing goes, I kind of handled it myself. A classmate did the program at Vanderbilt, and she had the same situation- the site coordinator emailed you and you rank PIs, she also found housing herself.

The program was an amazing experience. And the conference at Vanderbilt at the end was an excellent networking opportunity for PIs and colleagues!

I've already been rejected from NIDDK, and still waiting to hear from SRTP at Vanderbilt, but it seems like people have already been accepted or rejected-- I was wondering if there's anyone who hasn't heard back yet for SRTP or if I'm the only one.

Would the NIDDK program be considered an NIH fellowship?

I also haven't heard back from the Vanderbilt SRTP yet but I heard that the announcement will be going out wednesday
