Can anybody currently at Vandy or somebody that rotated through let me know how the externship is? I've gotten mixed feelings from the few that I have talked to at my home institution, and hoped that somebody here might have a better idea. I heading up in a couple of months, and wanted to know what to expect. Thanks.

Excellent lectures (tons of them, around 120 hours); not much clinical time (like 12 6-hour shifts, most of them pedi shifts).

The lectures are worth it in my opinion.

I'm really surprised to hear the rotation got mixed reviews. I haven't talked to anyone yet who didn't give the rotation rave reviews. They have a very strong commitment to teaching in their program, and the lectures there are some of the best lectures I've ever had. I rotated there last month, and would highly recommend the rotation to anyone going into EM.

Yes, there is a test with a written and an oral component at the end of the rotation.

Like Hercules said, there is a written and oral test. The oral test is simply an ACLS megacode. The written test is a fill-in-the-blank test with many questions having multiple answers. It's a difficult test, but doable if you study for it!

I also agree with Herc. I'm surprised you've heard mixed reviews about the rotation. You don't get that much clinical experience because of the lectures. The lectures you receive are top notch. Corey Slovis and Keith Wrenn are excellent lecturers. The topics covered are on target for an EM intern. I kept my lecture notebook (the "phone book" of nearly 400-500 double-sided pages) and reviewed it prior to starting my internship. It's very handy.

(Personally I think the Slovis method of analyzing chem-7's and acid-base disorders was worthy enough of the entire month!)

My phone book is a prize possession, and it definitely made the EM rotation I'm doing this month a lot easier. I agree on the acid/base-- you pretty much leave the rotation as an acid/base stud. That and you know the 5 causes of everything 😉
