Variation in imaging costs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The same several fold variation in price of MRIs exist here. I did a comparative study of the cash prices among 12 MRI units, some in hospitals, some ASCs, some in physician's offices for a lumbar MRI without contrast with radiologist fees added when they are billed separately. The results:
Range $1850-$3800, not dependent on quality of MRI (0.3T, 0.6T, 1.0T, 1.5T).

We see wider variations in the cash cost of an epidural interlaminar injection and the amount paid for the same injections by insurance. The latter depends solely on the venue, with the hospitals scamming the public the most.

450 cash price for noncontrast spine study by me.

Can get you $350 but that guy is in jail. He didnt take anything but cash and only did out of staters.

1.5T noncontrast about 40 mi from me $485.00. They don't bill insurance.

noncontrast MRI in this area, $800 (i believe $400 less than radiology centers)

Cash up front.
Done in chiropractor's office.

that is shocking. although i guess i shouldnt really be shocked by anything anymore.

what happens to the ovarian or renal cell CA that he misses? has to be sue-able, correct? or is it not worth the time/effort for the lawyers?

Yes I was just informed today that their are chiropractic "radiology residencies" as well as internal medicine, sports medicine and neurology. Crazy!

ummm.....w...t...f.....?

Is this a state by state thing or national?

I wonder if there are chiropractic cardiology residencies.

Who is paying for the read??? Private/out of pocket... okay. But if commercial payor, then this is a complete crock. I'm already pissed my ever increasing premiums are paying for expanding ICU wings filled with the living dead, but to pay for this farce...

these quacks must be stopped.

(Please note, that the above Radiologists are the top Chiropractic Radiologists in the Nation and within the Chiropractic Profession. They understand Radiology and the skeletal and neuromuscular structures better than most Medical Radiologist because of their in depth biomechanical view on skeletal alterations secondary to long term disease, trauma or other, which seems to be lacking in the medical reports.

The American Chiropractic Board of Radiology is the certifying agency for Chiropractic Radiologists.
DEFINITION OF A CHIROPRACTIC RADIOLOGIST
Chiropractic radiology is a referral specialty that provides consultation services at the request of other qualified doctors. Chiropractic radiologists provide consultation in health care facilities (private offices, hospitals, and teaching institutions) to meet the needs of referring doctors and their patients. The quality of the consultative services by the chiropractic radiologist in independent practice is reflected by the quality of their professional credentials.
Chiropractic radiologists recommend, supervise, and interpret radiologic studies as well as advanced imaging procedures. They advise referring physicians on the necessity and appropriateness of radiologic services and whether to select or to avoid certain diagnostic or clinical procedures.
In some instances the radiologist may act as a private practitioner. They may conduct research and apply diagnostic radiologic procedures and may be called upon to act as expert witnesses in matters of litigation.
Chiropractic radiologists are also concerned with imaging technology including image production, demonstration of normal and abnormal anatomy, and the interaction of energy and matter. Advancement in the technological facets of radiology is so rapid that only qualified radiologists can reasonably be expected to maintain the high level of proficiency required to supervise and interpret these procedures. The practice of radiology continuously involves the application of this technology to patient imaging and treatment. It is now well recognized that chiropractic radiology includes, but is not limited to, plain film radiography, fluoroscopy, tomography, ultrasonography, radioisotope imaging, computed tomography, digital radiography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Individual practices may vary by intent, licensure, and scope of practice laws.
