Hello all, just got back from touring the new VCOM building. The staff just moved in yesterday but the building is still being completed on the inside. Many words can describe this place but I think WOW, WOW, WOW, AND QUADRUPLE WOW does it for me. I can't wait for everyone else to see it!! Its magnificent!! 😀 😍

What made it so "WOW"? Just curious because I live about a mile away, and did not realize that they have moved in yet. The building does not look that big from the outside, are they planning on expanding the building so they can incorporate research labs for faculty? Just curious. Hope you like the 'Burg.

Let me just give you the general plan of the building. I've only toured 3 other medical schools so I don't know how this will compare with the rest of the country. The first floor contains the staff offices, 2 large lecture auditoriums, and about 5 very large OMM labs. The second floor contains a student lounge (not very big, and somewhat crowded but it will suffice), a small sandwich cafeteria line, and the rest of the 2nd floor is the bookstore, library, computer lab, and faculty offices. However there are no books in the library... everything will be electronic (which I dont particularly like, I like to have hard copies in my hands of books, etc) And the computer lab has no where to hook up your laptops on the desks... BECAUSE THE WHOLE BUILDING HAS WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS!!! So you could be anywhere in the entire building and be online without any plugging in!! That is just crazy to me! The third floor is basically the anatomy lab that overlooks the beautiful Blacksburg area complete with windows lining the 2 walls (its on the corner of the building). Each station will have a cadaver, and a computer screen with a virtual cadaver. There are also around 6 small conference rooms for small groups as well. Each room, and OMM lab has a polyvision white board with awesome speakers and projection capabilities. It looked like i was stepping into a Fortune 500 coporate office. That is pretty much it. Oh, and as far as a research center, as soon as the building is completed, they are going to start building a research building for the faculty nearby. I cant wait!!! 😀

That just sounds pretty awesome to me!! I knew about most of that stuff, but your description sounds a bit more in detail.

I will give you some advice on the library "problem." I know what you mean when you like to have the hard copies in hand. But I remember the admissions officers said that medical students would have all the Virginia Tech facilities available, which means their library on campus that is HUGE! The library on the Tech campus has lots of medical journals, but probably not near as many as a typical medical school. However, if they do not have an article from a journal that you want, the library staff will get it for you from a national network of libraries (including UVA and MCV and just about every other hot shot medical school), and give it to you FREE OF CHARGE!! I have even got articles from Sweden and Norway translated into english. It is cheaper for the university and VCOM to subscribe to an online version of the journals, rather than hard copies being sent them and having to have them bound together and stored. It also saves storage space, and paper for copies, that way the student has to provide their own paper, and/or print it out from home. The Tech library also has wireless internet access which is pretty good, however the old thick cinderblock walls make it a little difficult sometimes to get a good signal.
If you did not know before, several years ago Blacksburg was listed in a big magazine (maybe it was TIME or something else), as the most "wired" internet town in the USA. So you will definately see just about everything on the internet, including grades, financial stuff, libraries, even some classes are totally online and you never actually go to a classroom.

I think the virtual cadavers sound too good to be true, I can't wait to see that! The research building I am sure will be top of the line. Sounds pretty groovy to me!

Do you have any other concerns? Feel free to discuss them, I would like to hear what your opinions are.

Also, the 3rd floor group rooms are supposed to be wired with video cameras.

You'll be observed by an instructor outside the room and taped so you can review yourself taking patient histories and the like.

Smile! 😛
