VCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@Meerkat, when were you complete? Also, are you from the VA area?
I was unofficially complete Jan 9, but they're still waiting on my transcripts from last semester. Bea Jones pushed my application through, but stressed that I get it through. So official transcripts are on the way, but I did send unofficial transcripts for the meantime. I'm from NC. Also my interview is with the Carolinas Campus.

Also, I've had my part of the application in since the beginning of November. I've been waiting on my DO LoR, but it was submitted shortly before Christmas.

If anyone interviewing 2/6 wants to split a hotel room Sunday 2/5, let me know. Beyond excited for the interview have heard nothing but great things.

Im interviewing on 01/31. I actually got a call right when I arrived home from WVSOM (....). So im driving down again for another 7 hours (from DE).

Can you just email the unofficial transcripts? Or is just putting the classes and the grades in the survey good enough? I got a 3.0 my last (and final semester...graduated a semester early)...took 21 credits to finish up. All humanities classes where attendance was required...yeah never went to class. A work, C attendance = B grade. ugh. dropped cGPA from 3.511 to like a 3.44 or something. (However my 3.511 was from my school..AACOMAS cGPA was a 3.56).

Wait are they asking for your grades? If not wouldn't it be a better idea not to update them right now since you're saying your GPA fell?

The survey they sent me with my interview confirmation asks. But it also asks other work/volunteer updates as well.

Im currently taking classes to be CPR and First Aid certified (however...you can get certified online in 2 hours...so this is really nothing)....but I also got a job at duPont from now until august (when med school starts)...btw im from Delaware...headquarters of duPont.

Also, anyone know good hotels/motels to stay at near VCOM? I thought it was adjacent to Vtech..but just google map'd it and it isnt. thank goodness, everything near Vtech is pricey!

Actually it is right on the campus of VA Tech, in the research park near the airport. That is technically "on campus." But all of the local motels are relatively inexpensive outside of football season and graduation. You should be able to find a place well under $100.

I have a sensitive (probably ridiculous and possibly offensive/ignorant) question to ask you: How conservative and religious is Blacksburg? I loved the school and area and am ecstatic about my acceptance but was not able to get a good read on the social/political climate. I am essentially a slightly left-of-center moderate, non-religious Jew. Do you think there is a place for me there or will I be generally regarded as a pariah and have to live under a bridge? I know I must sound like a true California liberal idiot but I am completely unfamiliar with The South and unfortunately don't have much to go on. Will my moderately liberal mindset cause problems? Will I be ostracized because I think this country has more important things to worry about than gays marrying or joining the military? Or should I just keep my dirty hippyness out West with the rest of the shoeless clowns?

I live in WV, not far from the Blacksburg area. Don't worry about it. First, it's not the south, it has southern traits but has more Northern ones. The area around Blacksburg is strongly Christian conservative but VT is made up of students from all over and it has a pretty accepting culture. Most of your time will be spent with other med students.

I'm not Jewish so I can't give you the best view. Try contacting some of these organizations for a better idea.

I stayed at the Comfort Inn Blacksburg which was literally 2 minutes away from the VCOM campus. I paid $83.99 total for my room there. That was worth it in my opinion because they had a shuttle service pick me up from Roanoke airport and drop me off, and they even drove me to the campus for my interview. And of course, complimentary breakfast.

Accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Dance

Hey All,

I feel like an alien being a west coast student wanting to come across the country to VCOM but it's definitely my #1. What draws me is the "mission minded" and service oriented students and faculty... I'd love to be part of it!
Any advice from current students or people connected with the school in how to make a good impression? I will be applying for the cycle opening this May and coming from sunny Arizona.

The best advice I can give would be to just be yourself. I know we have a student from Arizona in our class and two from California. If you are "mission-minded", VCOM is a great school for those opportunities. It is what set VCOM apart for me, and why I ended up choosing here. I have been fortunate enough to travel to countries I otherwise would probably have never visited. It is an amazing experience!

Great! Glad you are enjoying it and thanks for the advice.

Happy Dance
There should be some more happy dances as of tomorrow evening. Recent interviewees should keep their phones close by during the afternoon hours as I believe decisions will be made during the day. Good luck to all.

Good luck to everyone waiting for tomorrow's news! This school seems to have a lot to offer and I love the available resources for local and international outreach 🙂

Seriously. Good luck to everybody! I wish to see everyone here in the fall. i joined the facebook group and the love is just absolutely phenomenal!!! I'm already giddy and being in Blacksburg this fall

kinda wishing the clock would move a bit faster right about now...

For you folks waiting for am acceptance phone call - when I was accepted I didn't get mine until 4:50pm and he said he still had a few more to make. On the forums, people started getting them about 1:45pm that day.

Good luck!

Yaaay just got the call!! What a way to end the week 🙂 I will be crossing my fingers for everyone!

Congratulations to both of you!!!! Welcome to the VCOM family. Hope to meet some of you at Accepted Students Day in March. I am a second year and happy to help answer any questions you may have in the coming months.

Thank you so much! I will definitely let you know if I have any questions. I might ask you about apartments soon... 🙂

Here is a spread sheet that compares match lists, GPA/MCAT scores of matriculates, COMLEX scores, and other types of data. It includes:

-2011-2008 Match lists for many osteopathic schools
- comparison of match results between schools
-GPA/MCAT scores, a profiles of average matriculating students compared between all Osteopathic schools,
-COMLEX scores for some schools
- You'll also find comparison of tuition / graduate indebtedness between schools

https://sites.google.com/site/osteopathicreference/home

(I can't host the spread sheet on the forums because of size limits)

I apologize in advance that I will be mass posting this through out the forums this afternoon but many people have been looking for this data and I want the to be able to find it!

I'm submitting an app to Windsor Hills. Seems like a great place for someone with a dog. Anyone else thinking of living there?

How long does it usually take to review after getting a complete email? It seems like they are picking and choosing certain applications to be reviewed over others. I was complete on Nov 29th with letters and everything done yet my file is still not reviewed. It's almost 3 months, it's a bit frustrating that they are this slow?

Hey all,

I will be withdrawing my acceptance to VCOM. My deposit is due Feb. 24th (Friday). As much as I love Blacksburg and Vtech, it does not offer what I am really looking for...nearby rotation sites. Honestly, though if VCOM was my only acceptance I would be ecstatic about going. It is a great place overall. Nonetheless, the professors I interviewed with attended PCOM. And saying that...I will most likely be attending PCOM in Philly. Best of luck to everyone. You all deserve a spot!

Well I'm new to this forum but I wanted to say great job everyone! I just got my MCAT scores back yesterday and submitted them to VCOM. VCOM is my one and only choice when it comes to school. I really hope this works out. I also submitted a letter of intent today. I hope this works out soon.

Got my MCAT score Tuesday and received a call yesterday. Have an interview next Wednesday! Anyone else going Wednesday, the 7th?

Did you do the secondary application? Or did they call you first?

I had submitted my secondary several months ago. I took the MCAT for the first time in January, so my file was basically complete with the exception of the MCAT score.

O. I just took my MCATs in jan for the first time also. I submitted my complete app in December and they haven't asked me to do the secondary yet. I was told they were waiting on my MCAT score for it to be complete. I hope they ask for a secondary soon. The deadline is march 15. Ugh so stressful.

Give em a call if you haven't already. They have been very nice and helpful when I spoke with them on the phone.

I'll call next week.

I thought the class was full?
We're getting towards the end of the interview season, but VCOM is definitely still interviewing at this point and will most likely be going to the waitlist this spring (deposits, people accepting late offers at other schools, etc)

Quiet thread lately. Any recent good news to report? Accepted Students Day over the weekend was fantastic. Good luck to all those still waiting!

Interviewed last week and they said the admissions committee is supposed to meet tomorrow. Said we should know something tomorrow or Friday!

I was accepted "pending a seat" on 2/23. So now I'm just waiting for someone to drop their spot. Hopefully I'll find something out soon!

Got the nastygram today. No VCOM for me this cycle. Have another interview for another school coming up. Hopefully it works out better 🙂

Just had my interview here. Probably the nicest interviewers ever..... goodluck to everyone still waiting.

Has anyone withdrawn or decided not to go to VCOM recently? So anxious waiting for a spot to open up!
