Having really screwed up on my MCAT this past April, I won't be surprised if I don't get accepted this year to any DO schools. Today I got a letter from VCOM, without any secondary application. Is this a rejection notice or am I just making this simple letter out to be more than it really is.

"We thank you for taking the time to submit an application to Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Med. Your application is scheduled to be reviewed by committee within eight weeks. Once we have the opportunity to evaluate your application, we will follow up with you regarding your status."

think you are going overboard with the suspicion?? it only sounds like they are informing you that they are reviewing your file and will get back with you after they are done reviewing. what's the big idea?? you're acting like they sent you a reject letter or something. "CHILL OUT PARTNER". I usually don't fuss at anyone but some of you guys are just rediculous! 🙄

The only reason I flipping out is because I received no secondary from VCOM with this letter. Most people are just getting secondary applications right about now.

i think they are saying that they're screening out primaries and if u are qualified... they'll send u a secondary or notify you if you get one.

GL

They review your primary and then they only send secondaries to the people they want to interview. This is nice because they are not taking everyones money like other schools that give out secondaries to everyone.

You may want to e-mail and ask what is going on. Some people are getting letters already that are inviting them to fill out the secondaries now.

It seems that they are not interested in you at the moment...but not dismissing you yet either....kinda like a waitlist for a secondary holding pattern.

Dude, you're screwed. Scheduled to be reviewed? Will notify regarding status? Yeah that means you're rejected.

Okay, here is what it means:

Your application is scheduled to be reviewed by committee within eight weeks. Once they have the opportunity to evaluate your application, they will follow up with you regarding your status

This is bogus. The admissions woman told me they send secondaries to people even without MCAT scores and review the full application for an interview after receiving the scores. Do you think they would intend to interview someone before seeing their test scores? Please stop spreading BS.

I'm sorry if you feel like that was bogus. I interviewed there last year and when I got my secondary I called the office, well actully the office called me to see if I had any questions and I asked the dean of admissions if they send secondaries to everyone that applies and she said NO only the ones that they were seriously looking at. They have probably changed it this year. Sorry to confuse anyone but this is what they were doing last year or the information they gave me.

From the VCOM website;

Students who meet initial admissions requirements will be invited to submit the secondary application and supporting documents.

I received a letter and invitation to fill out their secondary with a link via snail mail last week.

This is true. I interviewed there too last cycle and we were told that they send invites to fill out the secondary after screening the primaries.

Thanks Nate for pulling the info from the website!

Good luck to all!

That is greatly different than sending secondaries to people they only want to invite for interviews.

The way I see it is that I originally did not overreact and was actually portraying the correct scenario; that this letter was basically a pre-rejection letter. The only thing that is a tad shocking to me is that the school (VCOM) has only been around for a few years, and they are rejecting people pre-secondary; quite a rarity especially given that it is not one of the most popular DO schools at this point. As said, at this point, with my very low MCAT scores, I cannot expect anything great except that one or two schools may grant me an interview.

Be nice. Don't you remember when you were in the OP's shoes, and you were nervous about applications?

To pjc199 Hi,

Lots of schools send this type of letter to applicants they don't want to reject, but want to put them on hold for awhile. My friend was put on hold an an MD school, was then interviewed in April and accepted the first of May. So this type of hold isn't bad. It isn't the best you want now, but don't count yourself out yet.

Did you say that you were going to take the August MCAT? If so they may be holding out for your new scores. Also see if you can add something new, such as new grades, MCAT score, EC's, etc. That way you can send them an update that can only enhance your chances.

As to VCOM being new and therefore they should take everyone or at least give secondaries to everyone..... VCOM recieved over 2000 applications last cylce. Out of those, only 156 people were given a seat in this year's class. So they can't accept everyone nor can they interivew everyone. They have a fantastic staff from some of the most well-known schools in the nation so they may be new but their reputation is great because the dean and her staff have a great reputation.

Just hang in there for awhile and perhaps look for ways to improve your application.

Good luck.

😀 This means you are up for review to receive a secondary application. If you make the "First cut" they send you a secondary app to fill out (and you send em some more money of course 🙂 ). Then you will interview. The interview is cake by the way so don't sweat that. VCOM is a nice school and the facilities are brand-spankin-new! I declined acceptance though and went to WVSOM instead because it was a better fit for me and I got into the PBL program there.

Again, the sagely advice of Amy rings through clear. 😀 Many schools will wait to receive your August MCAT scores before making a decision for a secondary. Heck, some will even go ahead and interview you and then send you an acceptance or rejection letter based on your August MCAT. Sometimes it can delay things a smidge though...(*cough cough* ECU Waitlist *cough cough* 🙄 ) but for the most part, DO schools run with a different mentality in that they really do view the whole person in the candidacy process. Now go put your best foot forward and go nail that MCAT 🙂 We are pullin for ya!
