Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a summer break in between 1st and 2nd year at VCOM, if 3rd year rotations can be done anywhere in VA, and if 4th year rotations can be done anywhere in the US? I was also wondering if their "remediation week/ break block" are time off for students.

Thank you!

you get about a month or so off in the summer between year 1 and year 2. i'm not sure about if you can go "anywhere" for rotations in VA but i'm sure there is some flexibility with the hospital systems they work with and during you're fourth year, as long you get them approved which you most likely will, then yes you'd be able to go just about anywhere you want to go for your elective rotations. the breaks between each block is essentially just time off for those students who don't have to retake a anything during that week.

This info is for VCOM-Virginia campus:

- Yes, there is a break between M1 and M2, depending on when you take boards. I took my USMLE/COMLEX in mid-June and didn't have to report for 3rd year rotations until July 30 (so, roughly 6 weeks off). Some folks pushed their boards back to the end of July and had 1 or 2 days of summer break. Bad move.

- 3rd year rotations can ONLY be done at VCOM core sites. The core sites are currently: New River Valley (Blacksburg), Roanoke Valley (Roanoke), SW Virginia (Abingdon), Bluefield Va, Central Va (Danville/Farmville), Riverside Hospital (Newport News), North Carolina East (Fayetteville), North Carolina West (Hendersonville?), Alabama (Eastern Alabama Medical), South Carolina (Spartanburg and all over the state).

-4th year rotations can be done anywhere you want more or less. There's 9 slots 4th year. 3 of them have to be at a VCOM/AOA approved site. The other 6 can be anywhere else pretty much.

-Block break is a 9 day period between each of the 8 blocks that is completely free and open unless you failed a class the previous block, in which case you will have to stay at VCOM the whole week and re-mediate that class.
