Does anyone have any strong opinions of Vcom-VA vs Cusom? I saw previous threads from a few years ago but was wondering if Cusom becoming more established has changed things. Thanks for any help!

CUSOM: Great boards scores, 100% placement rate every year, GME in NC, killer match list last year.

Doesn’t vcom have a better first choice match rate though? Also I feel like being associated with VT would provide more resources.. IE more research opportunities

Iirc, they’re both mandatory attendance with a dress code. Go to the one with better board scores and more GME, which is cusom. Unless there’s a good tiebreaker like cost or preferred location.

I definitely like Blacksburg more, there isn’t much to do around cusom but that makes sense. vcom is about 8K less per year and the cost of living is similar in both cases

Not much to do isn’t really a bad thing. In fact, I attribute my schools terrible location to part of my success. You really don’t have the time or money in the first two years to do the stuff you do now.

it seems like you’re leaning toward the cheaper school in a preferred location which is pretty sound logic though. Like most DO schools, there’s really nothing magically better about one vs the other so go to the one you like.

Thanks for the help! My spouse is applying next cycle so I want her to have options to CNA or med scribe next year so I have to take that into consideration as well. What school are you at now? Do you you generally like the DO curriculum thus far?

Sent you a PM.

Just my opinion, I was in the same boat and chose CUSOM for the differences in curriculum. VCOM-Va was great, but they can have upward of 3-4 tests in a single week. For the cost, idk how many get the scholarships at CUSOM but I received the 10k one which erases the tuition difference between the two.

Vcoms curriculum is better imo especially the week off every 6 or w/e it is. Really good if you end up on the wrong side of passing and need to remediate something without stopping. Plus only having one hard course at a time allows better mastery IMO. Vcom impressive matchs are due to its system being better for boards.

But CUSOM gme is much better and ultimately gives opprotunities that vcom can't match even if its curriculum isn't as good. I would do Campbell if I was picking between these two.

I go to VCOM in SC. I can say the system based cirriculum is pretty rigorous and lots of exams, but we score well on boards with averages being 234 on Step 1. That being said, attendance and dress code is annoying, but you work around it. I don't know much about CUSOM, but I'm sure they have some pros over VCOM. Feel free to PM.

It’s crazy that CUSOM, a relatively new school, is already competing against VCOM-VA which is already a good DO school. Makes me wonder where CUSOM will be in the next 10 years.

There both newish IMO, neither was around 30 years ago. Campbell will be similar as it is today in ten years. It will still have good GME then too.

Heres the kicker. First choice match rate: they all want Primary care. That school is heavy on rural FM

234 is solid for a DO program even if skewed with only the higher performing students taking it

Do we know their avg step 1

Careful on the affiliation with VT for VCoM-VC because VT has VT Carilion which is an MD school officially associated with VT. Research opportunities are much less at VCOM because of this.

As a VCOM student, I disagree with this. They put out a book every year - especially to their students - that highlights student researchers. Between the three campuses, VCOM-VT has solid research opportunities and publications.
