VCU DPT Acceptances and questions!

I figured I would start a thread for those that are accepted to VCU DPT Class of 2014 and (hopefully) plan on attending...

I'm currently here for my undergrad as well and would be happy to answer ANY questions people might have about the program, MCV and the hospital, or the great city of Richmond!

I'm a Virginia Tech student with the HNFE major and an out-of-state student. Does being out-of-state help or hurt with their program? Also, do you have any recommendations on things to accomplish that the folks at VCU might like?
 
Go hokies! They are my football team since we don't have one. Anyways, I'm not sure whether I could speak for the School well in terms of in state vs. out of state. However, I wouldn't say that it is too much of a disadvantage. I would definitely email them! Email Dr. Wheeler or someone down in the School. I know for a fact that they take more JMU/VT students than any other in the state.

They recommend cell biology and any other upper level science courses (histology or CVA if you have it there at VT). I know your program requires orgo and biochem so with that you are ahead of the game (it's not required here at VCU for undergrad). Definitely do a wide variety of placements for volunteer hours including inpatient and neuro rehab. Just have the whole package...thats what I would stress. And start bugging the school...email them if you have any questions whether small or "dumb" so they get to know you!

Thanks for you answer. Where exactly do you go for a neuro rehab, which setting? Also I've taken Microbiology (received a fantastic grade in the class), but I haven't taken Cell & Molec biology. Would that be beneficial? I also don't know the people who review everything look at exactly the classes I take. The fact that I've taken Biochem, Ochem, multiple science classes, that may not necessarily be required, does that help would you say?

Also what about extra-extracurriculars and leadership roles? Are those of great importance? And does VCU offer interviews, or is that only for students they're thinking about accepting, but are not sure?

Sorry about all the questions, just curious 🙂
 
Neuro rehabilitation could be found in most hospitals...like Montgomery regional there at christiansburg. Contact their volunteer dept. and see if you could work something out with the PT dept.
VCU specifically recommends cell biology so I would go ahead and take cell/molec. However, I would email the school and find out whether micro can be substituted in for it before you do so! And yeah...multiple classes like that would strengthen your application.
Like I said previously, the whole package is what they want. They don't just want a book-smart student, but someone that shows leadership and people skills. So join clubs and all of that.
Interviews: none. The only option is to attend an information session. I would rather see them interview, but oh well. You can always go for a one-on-one with a professor at the school to discuss your future and any questions that you might have by just emailing them and requesting a visit. Do it!
 
Hey guys! I am a Hokie as well and just graduated from Virginia Tech this Fall with a Biology degree. I received an accpetance letter from VCU DPT program Class of '14 around 4 weeks ago. I just turned in my tuition deposit and so yeah I'm definitely going. I'm really excited and can't wait to move to Richmond!

hi I'm new to SDN, but I was wondering if VCU notifies you of acceptance via letter only and not through email? I'm still waiting on them and I really hope I get in but I haven't gotten any letters yet so I hope I'm still in the running...it's my first choice...

I got an acceptance letter from ODU in december, and I have an interview for Marymount coming up.

I got an acceptance email from VCU and then received an official acceptance letter packet a week later. I have heard that they do decision rounds the first week of months Dec-March. So you should probably hear from them by the first week of Feb or March. I'm not sure if this policy is true. Good Luck! 🙂
 
Has anyone heard from VCU yet that did not apply early decision??
 
Would any of you mind sharing your stats? I have applied and extremely nervous about the decision. It would be very helpful to know.
