Ok, the 200 word essay for VCU- what kind of topics did you guys talk about? I'm trying to think of something relatively interesting that wasn't on my AMCAS and am not coming up with much. I obviously don't want to choose a completely random topic, but would like to write about something relatively creative/interesting.

Any suggestions? Anybody have input on what they wrote about?

Thanks!

I have an interview there in a week and I wrote about a really inspiring experience (it's really really personal so that's why i don't want to post it here) but my friend (who got accepted last year) wrote about a truly random topic--her fascination with picasso's art (she was an art history major). Another friend of mine wrote about 9/11's impact on his life...and another wrote about how to pick melon's (the guy asked her about it during the interview and he seemed really amused--she interviewed there a couple of weeks ago).

I really don't think they care--I think they just want to read something short...the guy who interviewed my friend with the melon said that he liked the conciseness of the answer. However my friend who wrote about picasso's art said that her interviewer hadn't even looked at the essay.

good luck. write about anything you want!!

i wrote an essay i used for my other secondaries about overcoming a challenge. it was the same except handwritten. i have an interview there in a few weeks and i'm from outa state. just write on something that will give them insight into you and don't worry abou it.

so i just finished my handwritten essay for vcu...and i realize that i can't write cursive anymore! i'm so used to typing and printing...took me awhile to write that essay=)

Handwritten means printing, not cursive right? I'm assuming they want it in our file to make sure it is us taking the exams later. Like a back up if anything fishy is expected. Otherwise, wouldn't they want it neat & typed??

Yes, print your essay (you want them to be able to read it). The purpose of the handwritten essay is not to analyze your handwriting, but to have a more "personal" feel to each person's essay. Of course, I used my general form for any other secondary essay and wrote about something I overcame which drove my passion to get into medical school. Remember, catch their attention early in the essay. If you have a life-altering experience, write about the most prevalent aspect and work back. I worked from present, to past, and back to present in the essay. Guess it worked..LOL Don't sweat it, and good luck.
